The routes at lower areas are slippery and muddy with continuous rainfall. Also, the chances of flight cancellation are high, making it a challenge to get in and out of the mountains.

Difficulties faced during 14 Days Everest Base Camp Trek
Spending a week and more trekking in the mountains to reach Everest Base Camp brings you across several challenges. Completing the trek requires a calm mind due to unpredictability.
There are many difficulties you face during the 14 Days Everest Base Camp Trek, and some are:
Walking Difficulty
Walking the EBC trails is a tough job as you keep gaining and losing altitude every day. You have to make several steep uphill and downhill walks to reach your destinations.
The trails are pretty good and well maintained, but still, it is rough, treacherous, and rocky. Continuously walking for several hours can cause foot ache, knee pain, and even blisters without proper footwear.
Altitude Sickness
By far, altitude-related sickness is the most common difficulty aspect during Everest Base Camp Trek. You travel above 3500 m altitude, so chances of AMS are high, making it more challenging than your typical trek.
The amount of oxygen keeps decreasing as you trek higher in the elevation. So, human health might take a toll due to the low air pressure in highlands. Altitude sickness is a risk at the sort of elevation you are going on the trek.
The 14 days Everest Base Camp Trek begins from 2800 m altitude and reaches up to 5500 m. Without proper care and itinerary, the risk of altitude sickness increases.
So, if you see any symptoms like headache, nausea, dizziness, breathing difficulty, vomiting, sleeping difficulty, etc., inform your guide immediately. You need to halt your trek at times like this and rest at the spot or head down.
However, not everyone suffers from AMS as it mostly depends on the ability of an individual's body to cope with a new environment. But don't be overconfident and ignorant as it may lead to fatal conditions.
Length of the trek
The overall length of the Everest Base Camp trip is 130 km while walking on a guided trek. The journey is quite long as you need to walk 15 km each day for the next 9 to 10 days on the Himalayan routes.
Each day you walk 5 to 7 hours through rocky, flat, paved, graveled, and sometimes snowy terrain. When you combine the landscapes with steep climbs and descents, it gets more challenging.
Walking longer hours is harsher for beginners, as they do not have prior knowledge about the trails. So, they can quickly get tired, and leg cramps slowly down the entire group as well.
Weather and Climate
The climate in the mountains is not always perfect for trekking. If you travel during peak seasons, it might not create many challenges. But if you travel during off-seasons, it is a different situation.
The weather and climate can be unsatisfying for Everest Base Camp Trek during monsoon and winter. Trekking in upper regions is strenuous during winter due to heavy snowfall and road blockage.
Likewise, trekking in the lower parts is harsh during the monsoon due to continuous rainfall. Also, dark clouds are hovering over the peaks blocking your view. The routes are slippery, wet, and muddy during these seasons, making them challenging and exciting.
Crowded Routes
Just like off-season has terrible climatic conditions, peak season is considered the best time, so there are crowded routes. During spring and autumn, people worldwide visit Nepal to reach the foothill of Mount Everest.
You will find travelers like you at every destination and viewpoint, so it won't be easy to adjust if you are a peace-loving person. You might have no privacy and wait a long time to click lovely pictures.
Sometimes you are even stuck behind other trekkers due to clogged trails. Many people travel in large groups with guides and multiple porters.
High Altitude Cough
High Altitude Cough is also called Khumbu Cough, and another common problem trekkers face during the trek. The exact cause of Khumbu Cough is still unknown, but it is common above 3000 m altitude.
Many believe the cough usually occurs due to bronchial irritation caused by dry and cold air. The coughing gets violent with gain in altitude and hurts like hell. Plus, breathing through the mouth makes the situation worse, so it is better to wear a mask of some sort.
P.S. Make sure to carry something to cover your mouth, but it should not be very tight. Also, have cough drops or candies to help ease your throat.
Lukla Flight Delay or Cancellation
There are other alternative routes, but flying to Lukla from Kathmandu is the most popular way to enter the Khumbu region. It is the shortest path to reach the gateway to Everest, so almost all trekkers begin their trek from this place.
But you should know there are limited flights available each day between these points. Also, the flights only operate during early mornings to avoid high winds, poor visibility, and low-lying clouds.
So, during bad weather conditions, there is a high possibility of delays and cancellations. Sometimes, there is a delay due to increased air traffic in Kathmandu airport as well.
Accommodation
Accommodation might not be a significant problem, but it does cause difficulty during Everest Base Camp Trek. It is a primary issue if you are traveling during peak times due to the crowds of people.
Along with routes, the lodges and tea houses also get packed with trekkers. If you do not have reservations, it will be hard for you to find a room on arrival. Thus, many travelers camp outside or sleep on the kitchen floor and lobby.
Although it is less crowded during winter, many accommodations are closed due to heavy snowfall in the upper region. So, you might have to adjust to any open lodges to stay for the night. Thus, we always recommend you to book in advance due to these reasons.
Outdoor Toilet
Outdoor Toilets do not sound glamorous, but you need to adjust according to the condition. There will not always be toilets available in the routes, so that it will be the only option for you.
However, there are western-style toilets in most of the areas, but they might not be as clean as you expect them to be. Also, squat toilets are more prevalent in rural areas, so if you are used to this style, it will be hard to use for first-timers.
High price
As you know, Everest Base Camp Trek takes you through the rocky terrain, but the areas in the Himalayas are not yet developed. So, due to scarcity and lack of infrastructure, the price of goods and services is high.
The Himalayan people depend upon porters and animals for transportation as they are the only medium. They carry the products on foot from lower regions and deliver them to shops and lodges.
Everything in the Himalayas costs double the regular price due to the hard work and rarity of products. An essential bottle of water also costs $1 to $2 in the upper region. You will find several snacks as well, but they cost more than their usual price. Also, lodges charge you an extra fee for services like hot water, hedging devices, etc.
No ATM or Exchange Services
As you know, the Everest region is still underdeveloped, so there are no banks, ATMs, or money exchangers available in the upper parts. The last ATM of this trek is found in Namche Bazaar; after that, you won't find any pos and need to pay with cash for the rest of the journey.
Also, the atm machines are sometimes out of service in Namche Bazaar and Lukla, so it is better to take out enough money in Kathmandu.
Things to Know Before hiking to EBC Trek
Drinking-Water and Tablets
Your body will quickly lose water when traveling at a higher altitude, so you need to keep yourself hydrated. It is recommended to swallow 4 to 5 liters of fluid in any form (soup, juice, water) each day. Staying hydrated helps you avoid muscle cramps, dehydration, and altitude sickness.
However, a bottle of water might not be enough for an entire day, and there are few shops available on the routes. So, at times like this, you might have to drink from a natural source that can be unsafe.
Your body is not used to fresh unboiled water, so that some travelers can suffer from diarrhea or stomach aches. So, to avoid these mishaps, you need to carry purification tablets or iodine with you.
They kill harmful bacteria and make your water drinkable. But if you are still unsure about the water, you can buy extra bottled water at the lodges or when you come across a shop.
Acclimatize
Acclimatization is the most crucial process when going to high-altitude places. If this is your prime time in the mountains, adding more than one rest day to tackle and adapt to the changing situations is better.
AMS is a major obstacle while going on Everest Base Camp Trek, and its symptoms are usually seen when heading above 2500 m altitude. So, Proper acclimatization lowers the chances of altitude-related sickness.
14 Days Everest Base Camp Trek takes about two weeks to complete. Thus you should have at least two acclimatizations in your itinerary. It helps you adjust to the altitude in the higher environment.
You don’t rest or sleep during acclimatization but instead, move around and familiarize yourself with the current environment. So, during this off day, you hike to nearby hills and high-altitude villages.
Choose itinerary having longer days.
Usually, Everest Base Camp Trek can be completed from 7 to 16 days. But it is better to choose an itinerary having longer days as it gives you time to adjust to the altitude.
Moreover, the 7 Days Itinerary was made for travelers who are eager to visit the Everest region but have limited holidays. It is primarily suitable for professionals who have prior trekking experience as they can move on without acclimatization.
However, if you are a first-timer, we recommend choosing at least a 14 Day long itinerary. The longer the days are, the less complex the trek will be for you. The extended schedule has more acclimatization days, shorter walking hours, more touring time, causing more minor leg cramps, knee pains, and AMS.
Carry a Bottle
Never forget to pack your water bottles during a trek, as it is the most critical factor in your journey. You will find bottled water in the routes, but they are expensive, and shops are scarce.
You might not find shops for the next two to three hours from your last destination, so bringing your bottle helps at times like this. If you can, it is better to carry two bottles as you will have more water for the trip.
Also, thermos can be helpful as you can carry hot water in them to keep your body warm. You can fill hot water in the lodges, but they charge you a separate fee for it.
Wear the right shoes
Your trekking shoes determine how your journey will turn out to be because Everest Base Camp trek trails pass you through remote and rugged terrains. So, bringing proper footwear is important to traverse these challenging routes.
You walk for several hours and cover a certain distance each day, so be sure to check the shoes before carrying them on the trek. Please do not bring tight boots as they can cause blisters making it hard to walk for a longer duration.
If you are purchasing new shoes, make sure they fit and try them out a few times while going on a hike. Your boots must be durable, breathable, and comfortable. So, invest well in shoes before packing them.
Advance Booking
No matter what season you are traveling, always make sure to book your rooms and flights in advance. It will mainly come in handy during peak seasons when you won’t find any rooms or seats on the spot.
Sometimes booking in advance saves you money as several offers are available from time to time. Also, during peak seasons on arrival rooms cost more compared to advance booked rooms.
Eat nutritious food
You must eat balanced and carbohydrate-rich food during the trek. The lodge and tea house offers you typical Nepali food that gives you enough energy to complete the hikes.
You need to eat more food and not skip any meal as you burn high calories while walking up and down the paths. However, do avoid meat as they are not refrigerated and fresh.
Do not hide your health problem.
Reaching the base of Mount Everest is a dream of many travelers. So people tend to hide their health problems with the fear of halting their journey, which is a mistake.
You should never lie about your health as it will be fatal for your life later on. Always let your guide or companion know if you face difficulties like breathing problems, numbness, etc.
Permits Required for Everest Base Camp Trek
People frequently ask us whether they require permits or not for the Everest Base Camp Trek. Well, you do because, without an entry pass, you cannot enter the Everest region.
For Everest Base Camp Trek, you need to carry two permits, which are Khumbu Rural Municipality Permit and Sagarmatha National Permits.
Khumbu Rural Municipality Permit
This permit is required to enter the Khumbu region and can be purchased from Lukla or Monjo. For foreigners, the pass costs about NPR 2000 (USD 20) per person in the first four weeks and NPR 2500 (USD 25) after it. However, this permit is not available in Kathmandu.
Sagarmatha National Park

The permit costs about NPR 3000 (USD 30) per person for foreigners, NPR 1500 (USD 15) per person for SAARC, and NPR 100 per person for Nepalese. The mentioned prices exclude 13% VAT.
14 Days Everest Base Camp Trek Costs
The cost of Everest Base Camp Trek ranges from $2100 to $4500 depending on the services, outfitter, and route. And our 14 Days Everest Base Camp Trek is more affordable compared to other packages.
Our package covers most of the details like a guide, meals, accommodation, porter, and more. But it does not cover your personal expenses, so you need to carry between $15 to $25 for each day of the trek.
Be sure to carry the equivalent currency because they do not have money exchanges, ATMs, or banks. You need to bring cash to cover your bar bills, hot shower, snacks, phone or camera charging, and others.
Cultural Tips for Nepal
The mountainous parts of Nepal are still culturally conservative, so they are not fully aware of western culture. However, the Himalayan people of the Khumbu region do respect and are open to other cultures.
But it would be better to give them the same respect by considering their etiquette. You should not kiss on the cheeks or hug new people as gestures, point your finger at things or people, whistle inside houses, and more.
Also, while walking the trails, you will notice the men, women, and children wearing their traditional dresses. You do not need to wear the same clothing, but it would be better if you bring shoulder and knee covering clothes for the trek. Also, men should not go shirtless around the villages.
Training Required for Everest Base Camp Trek
There is no technical section in Everest Base Camp Trek, but you can do fitness training for this journey. The trek does require you to have huge stamina and a calm mindset. So, you can do courses like hiking, endurance, and cardiovascular to increase your physical and mental strength.
Short Hike
If this is your first time trekking in the mountains, then short hikes can be very helpful to get your body adjusted to walking long distances. It also helps you break in your new boots and understand the knee stress during treks. Before the actual trip, you can go on 3 to 5 hikes that last about 5 to 7 hours for training.
Cardiovascular Conditioning
Cardio training is a must because it prepares your body to deal with oxygen deficiency for a long time. This exercise stops you from becoming breathless on the trails.
Running, cycling, walking up and downhill, stair-stepping, swimming are some of the exercises for cardiovascular training. You can also carry weight packs during your courses to get used to the weights.
You can do this training 3 to 4 weeks before the actual trek for half an hour each day. It helps build overall strength in your legs, abdominal areas, upper and lower back.
Mental Conditioning
Many trekkers are unaware but mental stamina is just as important as other factors. Some days on this trek are comparatively tough, so you need to have the right mindset to push you through it.
Mental stamina is the one thing that remains active even when your body is exhausted. So, if you have strong determination and willpower, it helps you overcome any obstacle.
Travel Insurance
Before going on a trek, it is highly recommended to have travel insurance for your safety. The insurance should be able to cover your medical expenses and have helicopter rescue in case of emergency.
It would help if you made sure the insurance covers accidents above 5000 m trek because most companies do not offer high altitude security. Also, they need to have helicopter evacuation to fly you to the nearest hospital.

Choosing only a few things to bring in the trek will be a harsh task. You will be out for several days, so it will be confusing on what to pack and what not to. Thus, we have prepared a packing list to make your task easier.
