Overview

Annapurna Circuit Trek with Tilicho Lake is one of the most impressive hikes in Nepal. It’s an incredibly popular hiking destination in Nepal and around the world given the landscape views, Rocky Mountains, and wooded forest. This trek start in Kathmandu and end at Pokhara.

The trek is quite adventurous, taking you through the wilds and some arid lands in Manang. Travellers will be exploring the beautiful highlands with serene lakes and vibrant valleys on the excursion. The hike will also introduce trekkers to the famous cultural sites and religious landmarks in the region.

Annapurna Circuit held in high acclaim for its incredible beauty along with diverse culture, traditions, and norms. You can find people of different religions, castes, and creeds in the village of Annapurna, but mostly Gurung, Tamang, Thakuri, and Magars.

The trek is comparatively less difficult than most of the hikes in Annapurna. It has lengthier but easier hiking trails, which can be trekked by all-level hikers. Beginners can walk its moderate hiking trails with ease.

The circuit trek starts with a long but scenic drive from Kathmandu to Nagdi, which lasts for more than 6 hours. The trail venture starts from the village and passes many other remote settlements in the course of time.

We’ll be ascending several steep trails filled with rocks and boulders. It also takes us through mountain passes crossing multiple suspension bridges and climbing steep slopes. On the expedition, we’ll visit Tilicho Lake and do some exploration before heading towards the circuit.

The trek gets a bit more difficult from Manang as it rises ceaselessly and reaches the highest point on the circuit. The walk is mostly steep, gaining maximum elevation and finishing at the crest of 5,416 meters.

After reaching the summit, we’ll get an unobstructed view of Annapurna massif, Gangapurna, Manaslu, and Dhaulagiri. We’ll also witness the glacial moraines, rocky hills, and vibrant valleys. After enjoying the magnificent scenery, we’ll descend the trails to Muktinath and then Jomsom. From there, we’ll take a scenic flight to Pokhara, which provides a breathtaking view of lofty mountains and lush green hills.

Itinerary

Day 1
Drive to Nagdi(1100m)
Nagdi Altitude: 1,050 meters

Walking Hours: 6-7 hrs

Our expedition to Annapurna Circuit Trek with Tilicho Lake begins with a road trip to Nagdi in Lamjung. We’ll leave for Besisahar early in the morning, driving along the countryside with scenic farms and villages. After a bumpy ride of an hour or two, we’ll stop at the town for lunch before heading to Nagdi.

We’ll take another bus for the trip ahead and enjoy the ride for two hours. The trip will provide us a lovely view of surrounding green hills and lush green fields until we arrive at Nagdi.

Located in the east of Marsyangdhi River, Nagdi is a small riverbank village. It’s located at an elevation of 271 meters and comes with a stunning view of terrace farms and snow-capped mountains. Once we reach the lodge, you can freshen up and get some rest.
Day 2
Trek to Chamje (1410m)
Chamje Altitude: 1430 meters

Walking Hours: 6-7 hrs

After having a warm breakfast in Nagdi, we’ll begin the trip to Chamje. Away from the village, we’ll trek through a deep wooded canyon with a series of steep hills. After walking through the paddy fields and subtropical forest, the trial runs over a suspension bridge, passing a cascading waterfall.

Next off, it ascends the mountain pass and leads the way through a string of remote villages. Soon, we’ll descend the trail to Syaange, stopping for lunch, and then continue the journey for another two hours. Once we’ve arrived at Chamje, we’ll head to our teahouse and freshen up. Overnight stay is in the village.
Day 3
Trek to Bagarchap (2160m)
Bagarchhap Altitude: 2,160 meters

Today's trek will take us through terrace fields and rhododendron forest, offering an impressive view. The trail is initially steep and strenuous, taking us plenty of time to reach the Marsyangdhi River.

After a short descent, we’ll cross the suspension bridge and climb the steep hills followed by an uneven trail until arriving at the convergence of Marsyangdhi and Dudh Khola. Along the way, we’ll cross several streams and suspension bridges, which gradually unfold a magnificent view of Annapurna II and Lamjung Himal.

Bagarchhap is a remote small village in Manang. Sitting at 2,100 meters, it provides us with an unbeatable view of surrounding green hills, steep-sided valleys, and glistening mountains. We’ll spend the night in Bagarchhap’s local teahouse.
Day 4
Trek to Chame (2710m)

Day 04: Trek to Chame


Chame Altitude: 2,610 meters

Walking Hours: 6 hrs

The trek to Chame is one of the toughest and lengthiest walks with sharp inclines. We start the hike with a continuous ascent through pine and oak forests. Passing Danakyu, we’ll head to the small Tamang Village nestled at the lap of Lamjung Himal.

Out of the village, the trek is relatively easier with the level ground walk along the bank of the Marsyangdhi River. Making the way through Thanchowk and Koto, the trailhead leaves for Chame taking another good few hours. Most of the walk to Chame is now uphill and arduous, making us wear out.
Day 5
Trek to Pisang (3240m)
Pisang Altitude: 3,190 meters

Walking Hours: 5-6 hrs

The trip out to the trailhead of Pisang is long, with more than six hours of walk. It starts with a gentle walk up to the suspension bridge over Marsyangdhi River. From here, the trail enters into the pine forest and continues to follow it to Bhartang.

The trail ascends uphill from here until Dhikur Pokhari, which overlooks the stunning view of Annapurna massif and Pisang Peak. The path to Chame is continuously upward, taking us anywhere from 5 to 6 hours, depending on the altitudinal effect.

The village is located in Marsyangdhi River Valley, right north of Annapurna II and west of Paungda Danda. Once we’re here, you can enjoy the magnificent scenery of sweeping hills and green forests. Chame also offers a great accommodation service to the visitors.
Day 6
Trek to Manang (3540m)
Manang Altitude: 3,540 meters

Walking Hours: 5-6 hrs

The next day, we’ll hike on a rugged trail to Ghyaru and Manag. The walk is a 10.6 miles long trip through the pine forests and along the gushing river. After leaving Pisang, we’ll pass Braga, a famous cultural landmark. The village is home to 900 years old monastery and many old stupas.

Following the path, we’ll cross a wooden bridge over the Marsyangdhi River and make an ascent from the other end. After Ghyary, the trail continuously scrambles uphill, leading to Ngawal, and then takes a short descent to Mungji.

From there, the trek makes its final push to Manang, which is quite tough and demanding. The trails are semi-arid and rough, with lots of rocks and boulders. Finally, after trekking for six hours, the trail ends at the village.
Day 7
Acclimatization at Manang
Since we will have gained much of the elevation while climbing Manang, traveling any further could result in altitude sickness. Therefore, we’ll take the day off from Annapurna Circuit Trek with Tilicho Lake and spend the day acclimatizing.

After breakfast, we’ll go on a hike, crossing the river and trekking uphill, which provides a mesmerizing view of Gangapurna Glacier and surrounding mountains. After climbing further to a hilltop over the ridge, we’ll see the beautiful Manang Village.

It’ll take us 2-3 hours to ascend the trails, and enjoy the spectacular view. Along the way, we’ll witness a couple of ancient Tibetan monasteries, deep valleys, and pastures. Standing at the viewpoint, we’ll get an amazing view of Annapurna massif, Tilicho peak, and Gangapurna. Following the sightseeing, we’ll descend the trail to Manang and spend the night in a lodge.
Day 8
Trek to Khangsar (3735m)
Khangsar Altitude: 3,700 meters

Walking Hours: 4 hours

After early morning breakfast, we’ll leave for Khangsar Village, walking along the trail headed for Tilicho Lake. The path runs off Manang through the western gate before following the course down to the river. We’ll trek along a riverbank and through the valley of dusty rocks with the magnificent view of Annapurna II.

Once we reach the Khangsar Khola on the bridge, the trail heads up to an old Tibetan village with only a few inhabitants. Since the walk is short, it doesn’t take much time to get to Khangsar Village. Upon reaching the village, we can enjoy the splendid view and have a rest in the guesthouse.
Day 9
Trek to Tilicho Base Camp( 4140m)
Tilicho Base Camp Altitude: 4,919 meters

Walking Hours: 5 hrs

On this day, we’ll travel to Tilicho Base Camp, walking the uneven trail, which gains more than 1200 meters elevation. The trek is unlike anything else we’ve done till now, so we’ll start the expedition early in the morning.

The difficult 4.5 miles off the beaten path follows a wide road leading to a Buddhist monastery. From here, it ascends the high mountain ridge arriving at a junction of the new and old trail. We’ll take the new route, which goes up the ridge before descending the trail along a few switchbacks.

After spending most of the day climbing a steep trail, we’ll reach the valley before coming across a small stream and finally at Tilicho Base Camp. With this, we’ll call it a day and spend the night in a nearby teahouse.
Day 10
Trek to Tilicho Lake (4920m) and Shree Kharka (4050m)

At the first ray of sun, we’ll leave Tilicho Base Camp and head towards the lake. It takes about 3 hours to reach here so we’ll pick up the pace while walking the rough terrains. After reaching the lake, we’ll be able to enjoy the mesmeric view of crystalline still surface water and shimmering glaciers.

Once the sightseeing is done, we’ll leave the site and gently descend the trails for an hour making it to Manang. Following the trail from above the village and down to the river, we’ll head to Shree Kharka. On the course, we’ll cross a suspension bridge and trek through the forest before taking a difficult walk uphill to reach the village.
Day 11
Trek from Shree Kharka to Yak Kharka (4040m)

After breakfast in Shree Kharka, we’ll start our trek with a short and easy descent to Khangsar Village. Passing the old monasteries and crossing a river, the trail rises up to a plateau, providing us with a magnificent view of Annapurna and Gangapurna. From here, the trail scales up to the barren wild terrain with bushes from the west. Following the path through Gumsang, we’ll end the hike at Yak Kharka, which comes with a fantastic view.
Day 12
Trek to Thorong Phedi (4050m)
Thorong Phedi Altitude: 4050m

Walking Hours: 6-7 hrs

Overnight at: Teahouse

After breakfast, we’ll continue the trek through the last settlement of Lear. Following the windswept trail, we’ll ascend a ridge that provides a picturesque view of Annapurna II, Gangapurna, Tobuche, and Chuli Peak.

From here, the trail descends to Marsyandhi, which we’ll cross using the wooden bridge. On the way, we can see a small local teahouse, where visitors can stop and eat. Walking past the village, we’ll climb up the trail from the right bank of the river and then follow the narrow path before descending to Thorung Phedi.

When placed, we can either stay in the teahouse and relax or scramble the trail to high camp for acclimations. Come what may, but you can always relish the magnificent view of surrounding snow peaks and valleys.
Day 13
Trek to Muktinath (3,800m) via Thorong La Pass (5,400m)

Today’s trek is one of the most challenging walks of all Annapurna Circuit Trek. With more than 10 miles long trek, it’s physically demanding and strenuous. We’ll spend most of our time climbing the rocky hills, which gains pretty much elevation.

The day starts with a four-hour steep ascent to the top of Thorung La. After a few winding courses, we’ll climb up the hills and mountain pass with rugged trails. We’ll trek through loose rocks and boulders, which are hard to climb.

After reaching the summit, we’ll get to see a breathtaking view of lofty mountains, undulating landscapes, and towering hills. You may also witness KaliGandaki River Valley from the top, which is quite impressive.

Soon, we’ll descend the cliff top and make our way to Chabarbu. It’s a popular stop for trekkers to relax and have snacks before continuing the expedition. Trekking through the long grassy meadows and steep slopes, we’ll climb down to the lower Mustang and back to the Muktinath.

Upon arrival at the village, you can see a lot of ancient Tibetan monasteries and stupas. The trek will also reward you with the jaw-dropping view of Dhaulagiri and its nearby snow peaks. We’ll also visit the Hindu Temple and offer prayers along with other devotees.
Day 14
Trek to Jomsom (2750m) Via Kagbeni.
Jomsom Altitude: 2,720 meters

Walking Hours: 6 hrs

It’s the last day of the hike as we prepare to leave for Jomsom. As soon as the breakfast is done, we’ll flee Muktinath and start descending the trail through Lupra Village. While walking the settlement, we’ll come to discover the famous Bonpo monastery.

The trek to Jomsom is much easier than the previous one, as most of the trails are downhill. It only requires 5 hours of hike, making the travel fast and convenient. The last few sections of the trail can be a bit harder due to sharp inclines.

We’ll be ascending the trails to Kali Gandaki River and a windswept valley to reach Jomsom. Sitting at 2,700 meters elevation, Jomsom offers an impressive view of Dhaulagiri, Nilgiri, and Tilicho Peak.
Day 15
Fly from Jomson to Pokhara
Now that Annapurna Circuit Trek with Tilicho Lake has been completed, it’s time for us to fly back to the city. So, after eating breakfast, we’ll arrive at Jomsom airport to take the regular flight to Pokhara. The flight will last for 15 to 20 minutes and comes with a jaw-dropping view of scenic mountains, beautiful waterfalls, and verdant meadows. After landing at Pokhara, we’ll drive you to your hotel. Our trip end in Pokhara with 1 night hotel. From here onward travel you plan yourself.
