Overview

Gokyo Renjo La Pass Trek offers walking through off-beat routes in the Everest region. Since the paths are away from the mainstream, it is relatively exotic and less crowded. Also, the views offered in these routes are not less than the base camp trails.

Gokyo Renjo La Pass Trek lies in the Solukhumbu district of Nepal and is part of the Sagarmatha National Park. You need to cross over one of the high passes known as Renjo La on this trip.

The region is home to Sherpa, Rai, Gurung, and other ethnic communities. These people are living in harmony. They have friendly personalities with helpful nature.

People from these communities have opened tea houses and lodges on these routes. They offer you comfy and hygienic hospitality. They always are all smiles on their faces and are welcoming.

The pass was once a trade route to Tibet when Sherpa people walked through these routes to cross Nangpa La and reach Tibet. The Gokyo and Renjo La Pass Trek have been the best alternative for Everest Base Camp Trek.

You get to see Mt Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, Cho Oyu, Aba Dablam, and other snow-capped peaks of the Khumbu region. Also, the route offers endangered animals like red pandas, snow leopards, and many more.

Gokyo Renjo La Pass Trek begins by flying to Lukla and then trekking to Phakding. From there, you hike to Namche Bazaar and acclimatize to this happening town.

Then, you trek to Dole and then to Machhermo, where you rest for the following day’s climb. The next day, you head towards Gokyo village, where you have your lunch and hike to Fifth Lake.

After, you return to Gokyo for the night and stay an extra day for acclimatization. During this time, you head to the top of Gokyo Ri for a sunrise view and return.

The next day, you cross over Renjo La pass and trek down to Lungden. Later you descend to Thame and visit a monastery. From here, you head back to Namche and then Lukla.

Itinerary

Day 1
Arrival to Kathmandu.
Kathmandu Altitude: 1400 m above sea level

Overnight at Kathmandu

Leaving your country for about 15 days, you catch your flight towards Nepal to begin your trek. There is only one international airport in this country, in Kathmandu, the capital city. So, this is the first place you will land.

After landing here, you head to the terminal where your guide will be waiting for you. Then they take you to your hotel and help you with the check-in procedure. Later, they leave you with an unplanned remaining day.

With no plans for the day, you can rest in your rooms or go to nearby markets or places on a mini-tour. Kathmandu looks its best during evenings when families and youngsters come out to roam.

The crowded street feels comfy in its own way, with a hint of fun in the air. While you are out, you should try out the street food as it is delicious but oily.
Day 2
Kathmandu Sightseeing tour.
Overnight at Kathmandu

The second day feels overwhelming when you realize you have already reached Kathmandu. With these feelings, you wake up, freshen up, and have your breakfast.

Then you get ready and meet with your guide in the lobby, which is there to pick you up for the sightseeing tour. Today, you take a break before beginning the trek and visit the World Heritage Sites of Kathmandu.

You first drive to Kathmandu Durbar Square, one of the three squares. This place once used to be the palace of the shah and Malla kings, but now it is just an attraction point. Several temples surround this place and one of them is also a shrine for the Living Goddess, Kumari.

Then you drive to Monkey temple, also called Swayambhunath, which is the second destination. This monument lies on top of a hill that gives the complete view of Kathmandu valley. This place is also an essential point for Buddhist followers.

From there, you drive to Boudhanath, which is another Buddhist site and your third destination. There is a vast white dome with eyes and nose in the middle and is surrounded by houses. Several rooftop restaurants give a magnificent view of the stupa.

After, you head to Pashupatinath temple, the final destination of the sightseeing tour. This place has the main temple devoted to lord shiva with several small shrines of god and goddess surrounding it. The Pashupatinath area is holy ground for Hindu followers and shiva devotees.

Finally, after ending the sightseeing tour, you stop for lunch in a good restaurant. You then finish your lunch and head back to the hotel, where your guide will give you a brief explanation about the Gokyo Lake Renjo La Pass trek.

After the briefing, you can hit the shops if you missed any items needed for the trek, or you can go out and roam around the area. Sleep fast tonight as you have an excursion to begin the next day.
Day 3
Fly from Kathmandu to Lukla & Trek to Phakding (2610m)

Overnight at Phakding

After a peaceful night, you now get ready to begin the first day of Gokyo Renjo La Trek. Wake up fast today as you have an early morning flight to catch from the airport.

After getting ready, you wait in the lobby for the guide to drive you to TIA. You catch the domestic flight to Lukla from the airport, which has about half an hour of airtime.

The flight is filled with scenic views of the Himalayas and green valleys. With these scenarios, you arrive at Lukla airport, one of the thrilling airports of the world.

From Lukla, you now begin your trekking journey towards Phakding. You first head down the central alley and walk past the airport viewing area, where you have your breakfast.

Then after filling your tummy, you continue the walk through the alley and reach the Khumbu Pasanaglhamu Rural Municipality office. You can purchase one of the two permits needed in this region for trekking from here.

From this point, you follow the north trail, passing pasture lands and making a slight drop towards the Dudh Koshi River. Following the jungle trail, you make the descent and walk along the bank of the river.

Following the trail, you reach Cheplung village, where you have your lunch. Then you do a slight climb through the jungles and pass small towns. The routes meander around the fields of buckwheat, potatoes, and cross rows of dahlia trees.

Most of today's portion is downhill with short uphill sections as well. The trail is a mixture of dirt, stone pathways, and a few rocky areas. However, the trials are not so troubling and are pretty straightforward.

Enjoying the walk, you make a considerable descent and reach Phakding. This beautiful village is on a lower portion of the paths, so you will see more greenery here. Also, some mountains are peeking out far away.

Phakding offers the stunning sight of the holy mountain, Khumbila (5761 m). You can roam around the day and rest early for the following day.
Day 4
Trek to Namche Bazaar (3445m).
Namche Altitude: 3445 m above sea level

Walking hour: 5 to 6 hours

Overnight at Namche Bazaar

Today's trek takes you from Phakding to Namche Bazaar, the central hub of the Everest region. The walk today is one of the toughest as you gain nearly 4000 m altitudes.

The trek is longer this day, so you make an early start and cross over the suspension bridge located on the other side of the village. Continue walking the routes for a few hours, and you reach the Sagarmatha National Park Permit Counter.

After checking the permit, you pass the station and head through the gate, walking downhill to the river. From here, you cross several suspension bridges, both short and long.

Following the trails, you reach the lovely village of Benkhar, where you get a glimpse of Mount Everest. Then you head up using the stairs and cross over the Dudh Koshi River using the Hilary suspension bridge.

You get to see the beautiful view of valleys, forests, rivers, and mountains in the distance from the bridge. After this, the incline gets steep as you keep gaining elevation and take you to a resting place where you have your lunch.

After lunch, you resume the walk through the beautiful forest of rhododendron and reach the last checkpoint before Namche. Shortly after the checkpoint, you reach your destination.

Namche Bazaar is the most happening town of the Khumbu District and the Gateway to Everest region. This place has its famous homemade yak butter and cheese. You can explore this beautiful town and interact with people.
Day 5
Acclimatization day at Namche Bazaar.
Everest View Hotel Altitude: 3962 m above sea level

Walking hour: 6 to 8 hours

Overnight at Namche Bazaar

Your first acclimatization is held here at Namche Bazaar. During your stay here, you take a short hike to the outskirts of the town. You will visit the highest altitude hotel, Hotel Everest View, and have breakfast there.

This point gives Everest's stunning view and other peaks like Makalu, Dorje Lakpa, Ama Dablam, etc. You then trek down to the village of Khumjung, the largest Sherpa town of Khumbu.

You will visit the Khumjung Monastery and view a yeti skull. Then you later trek to Khunde village to explore an ancient monastery. After researching, you head back to Namche Bazaar.
Day 6
Trek to Dole (4150m)
Dole Altitude: 4150 m above sea level

Walking hour: 6 to 7 hours

Overnight at Dole

YOu enter the 4000 m climb with this trek. You head north this morning and follow the Dudh Koshi River towards the stunning Ngozumpa Glacier. From here, you make a short climb to the ridge that grants you the glorious view of Lhotse and Everest.

Then you continue to walk the mainstream trail for some hours, passing Tibetan handwork shops as you leave the main routes; the flow of locals and trekkers is also lower. The walk-in isolation is quite a pleasure.

After some time, you reach a crossroad that lies high above the Dudh Koshi. You take the upward trails and head to Mon La Pass, following the forest section of fir, red birch, and rhododendron.

You also pass pleasant waterfalls and areas of yak pasture as you gain altitude. The trail then leads you to the settlements of Tonga and Gayle. From here, Dole is not that far; with a few twists and turns, you arrive at this destination.

Dole is a beautiful village that lies in the Dudh Koshi Valley. The town supports the tourism industry with its numerous guesthouses. You get to see the first views of Cho Oyu from this point.
Day 7
Trek to Machhermo (4470m).
Machhermo Altitude: 4470 m above sea level

Walking hour: 3 to 4 hours

Overnight at Machhermo

You begin the trek with a steady but constant climb along the valley. The air here gets thinner comparatively. Walking ahead, you enter the juniper forests that dominate the woods.

Continuing to climb the paths, you get to see the beautiful summer grazing and settlement land. This place gives a superb view of Kantega, Thamserku, and Cho Oyu.

The view of tall silver peaks will be a treat to the eyes. You keep ascending with fantastic scenarios surrounding you till Machhermo. After reaching here, you have your lunch and go out exploring.

Machhermo is a small village with few buildings in the valley. The villagers from lower regions own lands here to graze yaks in the summer months. The trek between Dole to Machhermo is not that long, so you acclimatize and prepare for the next day's climb.
Day 8
Trek to Gokyo (4750m), after Lunch hike to Fifth lake and back to Gokyo
Gokyo Altitude: 4750 m above sea level

Walking hour: 6 to 8 hours

Overnight at Gokyo

The trek to Gokyo begins after a delicious breakfast in Machhermo. The trails lead over the ridge to see a more exotic view of Mount Cho Oyu right in front of us.

Then continuing the trek along the valley high above the river, you walk to Pangka. You make a stop here to enjoy the excellent view of Cholatse and Khantega gorge.

You now descend to the river bank and climb to the high alpine country to approach the Ngozumpa Glacier. From here, you walk onto the rock and moraine that extends down from it.

Enjoying the breathtaking view of Cho Oyu and Kantega, you ascend to a leveled path and reach Gokyo village. You stop here for lunch, get refreshed and hike to the Fifth Lake.

You head north from Gokyo and gain a little altitude to reach the fourth lake. Then you continue the trail leading up to the Fifth lake (Ngozumpa Tso). You get to see the view of Gyachung Kang, Ngozumpa glacier, Nuptse, Lhotse, Makalu, etc., from here.

After enjoying the beauty of peaks, you head downhill to Gokyo. Get some rest after a long and incredible journey.
Day 9
Early morning hike to Gokyo Ri 5360m for sunrise

Walking hour: about 7 hours

Overnight at Gokyo Ri

Gokyo village is a famous resting stop for trekkers. During their time of acclimatization, they hike to Gokyo Ri for a sunrise view. So, you wake up early and get ready to walk the strenuous paths.

The trails to Gokyo Ri have several steep inclines with rough and rocky sections at some point. With continuous climbing, you reach the top of Gokyo Ri to view the spectacular sunrise.

The view from Gokyo Ri gives a classic postcard feel with a beautiful scene of snowy peaks and deep turquoise lakes. The point is surrounded by Thamserku, Kantega, Lobuche, Taweche, Makalu, and more.

After enjoying some moments here, you head down to Gokyo and explore around the village for the rest of the day.
Day 10
Cross the Renjo La pass & trek down to Lungden (4350m).

Overnight at Lungden

The hike to Lungden is a long walk as you cross over the Renjo La Pass today. The trek is quite exciting yet challenging, with several ups and downs. You have an early morning breakfast and head back to the lake.

Then you gently walk uphill through the grassy area and boulders with a zigzag path. The routes get steeper as you keep gaining altitude till Renjo La Pass. After reaching the top, you are welcomed with the marvelous view of Cho Oyu, Nuptse, Everest, Cholatse, Makalu, and more.

After, you descend steeply through the west side of the pass into a remote valley with stunning landscape. The path was an ancient trading route used by Tibetan traders.

From here, you keep descending through the lovely meadow towards the Bhote Koshi Valley. You then continue to walk beside the river and head towards Lungden.

Lungden has a few teahouses available that provide basic facilities. You can interact with the friendly villages and know their history.
Day 11
Trek down to Thame (3850m) and visit Thame Monastery
Thame Altitude: 3850 m above sea level

Walking hour: 5 to 6 hours

Overnight at Thame

We now trek south and down to Thame from Lungden. The hike between these points is easy with mostly gradual descents. You follow the path on the east side of the river and pass several quiet villages.

You then walk gradually downhill to Marulung and cross the bridge over the Bhotekoshi River after walking for a bit. Then you continue the trek with several ascend and descend till you reach Taranga.

You walk through a beautiful dense forest, observing varieties of animals and plants. Then you pass along many old-walled Sherpa villages showcasing their unique culture.

Continuing the hike downhill, you arrive at Thame. This small village has an old monastery you will visit for evening prayers. Later, you can explore the valley and view the stunning scenes of Teng Kangpoche and Kwangde.
Day 12
Trek down to Namche (3440m).
Walking hour: 8 hours

Overnight at Namche Bazaar

Leaving the village of Thame, you head towards the Sherpa Town, Namche Bazaar. You begin the walk along the glacial stream and make a gradual descent to the Bhotekoshi Valley.

From here, you cross the river gorge via a suspension bridge and enter the mysterious forest of birch, rhododendrons, and pines. You then do a gradual climb high above the Bhote Koshi through picturesque Sherpa villages.

You then continue to ascend the trails through pine forests and walk a leveled path till Namche Bazaar. After so many days, you can again enjoy hot showers and western food in this place.

Namche offers wifi, cafes, and restaurants with western food. It feels like heaven after living many days far from technology. Roam around the town and live the moment.
Day 13
Trek down to Lukla
Walking hour: 8 to 9 hours

Overnight at Lukla

After several days of trekking in the Himalayas, it's now time to wrap up your Gokyo Renjo La Pass Trek. You trek back to Lukla from Namche Bazaar before flying back to Kathmandu.

You have a nutritious breakfast, then check out of the tea house and hit the road. Following the stone steps, you head down the village and lose some elevation. Then trekking for some minutes, you arrive at the rest stop to get the final glimpse of Mount Everest.

After this point, you do not get any views of mountains, although a small portion can be seen through the trees. You continue to trek downwards, walking in a mixture of dirt pathways and stone steps.

On your way back, you cross several suspension bridges and walk the Dudh Koshi River. From here, you make a steep decline and do a few uphill climbs as well.

Continuing the trek, you arrive at Phakding, where you have your lunch. Then you walk further down and pass several villages before making a steep incline to Lukla.
Day 14
Fly back to Kathmandu
Overnight at Kathmandu

Wake up early and catch the flight back to Kathmandu. You view the same scenes of valleys, forests, mountains while flying to Kathmandu. Enjoy the views as you say goodbye to the Everest region.

Landing at the TIA, the guide will take you to your hotels and drop you there. The remaining day is free, so do as you please. You can visit shops, restaurants, and other places.
Day 15
Final transfer to airport for your flight back to home.
After your final night in Kathmandu, it is now time to say our farewell. You will return to your homeland today, and our officers will transfer you to the airport according to your flight schedule. Have a safe flight, and do remember us for other treks

How Difficult is the Gokyo Renjo La trek?

Gokyo Renjo La trek is a challenging trek of the Everest region, but with a good physique, you can complete the trek with ease. You need to build your leg strength and train your body to cope with a higher environment.

When are the best months for Gokyo Lake Renjo La Pass Trek?

Gokyo Renjo La Trek is suitable from September to November and March to May. However, we can arrange the trek during other months, but the views might not be as stunning as the best months.

Do we require trekking permits for this trek?

Yes, you need to purchase two permits to complete the Gokyo and Renjo La Trek. The permits required are Sagarmatha National Park Permit and Khumbu Rural Municipality Permit.

How many hours do we walk each day?

You need to walk a minimum of 5 hours and a maximum of 7 hours each day. If this is your primary time, we recommend strolling, as walking fast can cramp your legs.

How is the Accommodation Facility during the Trek?

The Accommodation facilities in tea houses are good during the trek. But note that the services get basic as you reach higher in the altitude. Also, you need to pay extra to use wifi, hot showers, and bar bills.

What are the chances of getting altitude sickness?

The problem of Altitude sickness is widespread in the Himalayas, and Gokyo Renjo La Pass Trek is no different. There is a high probability of suffering from altitude sickness as you head up to 5000 m. So, it would help if you cared about your health and body.

Do we need a permit for this trek?

Yes, traveling without a permit is impossible in the Gokyo Renjo La Pass trek. You need two different licenses (Sagarmatha National Park Permit and Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Permit) to fulfill the journey.

Do you provide Gear and Equipment?

Yes, we provide trekking gear and equipment as it is a part of the package. We give you a down jacket, sleeping bag, hiking poles, and duffel bags. But you need to return them after completing the trek.

Best Time for Gokyo Lake Renjo La Pass Trek

There are generally two best seasons for trekking in Nepal after fall (Autumn) and winter (Spring). But Gokyo and Renjo La Pass Trek are possible in Winter and Monsoon as well.

Autumn

Autumn is a spectacular season for Gokyo Renjo La Pass Trek. The season begins in September and lasts till November. These months offer tantalizing mountain scenes and excellent climatic conditions.

During this period, these months have pleasant weather that is not so cold and hot with crystal clear visibility of peaks. The Monsoon has just departed, so it results in bluebird days and sunny climates.

The rain washes out the pollution and dust from the skies giving the clearest mountain views of the year. The temperature is mild in the earlier month but cools off by Autumn. It ranges between 5 to 30 degrees in this season, depending on the month and elevation.

The days also begin to shorten after Autumn, so the walking hours also lessen. There are occasional short storms in the high altitudes that may dump considerable snow.

Spring

The winter has just ended, so it is chilly in the earlier month, but the temperature normalizes by mid to late April. The snow also completely melts by this time, opening paths to passes above 5000 m.

March is suitable for treks that do not cross high passes, while April is best for outings involving high passes. Similarly, May is great for both trekking and climbing in the Everest region.

Winter

Winter is not recommended for high pass treks, but if you wish, some particular month is suitable for Gokyo Renjo La Trek. The season begins in December and lasts till February.

The days are clear and bright but cold in the mountains. The snowfall is usually heavy in higher elevations, causing solid wind with a chilly climatic condition. The temperature differs from 6 to 12 degrees during the day and below 0 degrees during the night.

However, the earlier weeks of December and later weeks of February are suitable for Gokyo Renjo La Pass Trek. But January is not the best time as the paths are blocked with snow in high passes. However, January is suitable for lower elevation treks like Everest Base Camp.

Monsoon

Treks are possible during Monsoon season, but trekkers can face slippery and muddy routes due to heavy rainfalls. The season begins in June and lasts till August. The temperature ranges from 6 to 25 degrees during the season.

Trekking conditions during Monsoon are unfavorable but not impossible. You have to trek at the right time to avoid obstructions like landslides, floods, and others in lower regions.

However, the weather is favorable till mid-June as slight rainfall begins from here onwards. Also, the Gokyo and Renjo La Pass trek is recommended in the last week of August.

The average rainfall begins after mid-June and is high during July but cools down by late August. So, the routes are blocked in lower regions, but scanty rainfall in higher places allows users to enjoy the trek.

How Difficult are The Gokyo and Renjo La Pass Trek?

The Gokyo Renjo La Trek route has some steep terrains and slippery paths, but overall, the journey is doable and relatively moderate. The trail is well defined but covered in the snow, sometimes causing navigation difficulties for new trekkers.

If you don't feel like drinking, then you can at least take a sip but don't let your body dehydrate. You can carry flavors, electrolyte tablets, or teas if you are not much of a water drinker.

Bring a water bottle and purification pills.

Never forget to pack your water bottle and thermos before the trek, as it will be pretty helpful. You can purchase bottled water on the way, but they will cost about USD 1 or USD 2, depending on the place.

Buying bottled water will not only be expensive, but you will not find shops in every direction. So, if you bring along your bottle, you can at least fill them with natural water or from a reservoir.

Also, carry a purification tablet as the water is from an unknown source and can affect your health. The purification tablet kills the harmful bacteria present in the water and makes it drinkable.

It does not mean the water is not clean, but as foreigners are not used to natural water, they might get diarrhea or other infection.

Always carry cash

Many Himalayan parts are still not fully developed, so there are no online transactions available. Also, finding banks and ATMs is impossible in the higher altitudes. You will find the last ATM in Namche Bazaar during this trek.

After this point, you will have to carry enough cash to pay for your additional needs. Also, bring the country's current currency as they do not accept dollars, pounds, etc.

You have to change your money in lower regions as there are no exchange centers in the upper areas.

Accommodation and Food on Gokyo Renjo La Pass Trek

The Accommodation is different in Kathmandu and during the trek. In the capital, you will stay in Three Hotels, while you stay in good quality tea houses during the tour.

Do not worry about the hygiene of the trekking lodges, as they are clean and comfy. Each room offers a wooden bed with a foam pad or simple mattress, a cotton pillow, and a blanket or quilt.

For fooding, you will only get breakfast in Kathmandu, so you pay for your lunch and dinner. During the trek, all three meals (breakfast, lunch, and dinner) will be paid for by the company.

During the trek, you get to eat western breakfast and lunch while the dinner will be traditional. For breakfast, the lodges offer pancakes, toast with jam or butter, varieties of egg, coffee, tea, juice, and more.

For lunch, you get to have chowmein, momo, pasta, soup, etc. Similarly, you will eat rice, lentils, curry, pickles, and several more side dishes for dinner.

The trekking routes of Gokyo Renjo La Pass lie inside the Sagarmatha National Park, so you need it's entry permits. The pass costs about USD 34 (NPR 3400) for foreigners and USD 15 (NPR 1500) for SAARC nations.

Similarly, you need to purchase a Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Entry permit to enter the restricted settlements of the Khumbu region. The pass costs about USD 20 (NPR 2000).

If you are proceeding through an agency, then they will arrange the permits for you. But if you are traveling solo, then you can get these permits from Kathmandu or Monjo.

Flight and Travel Information

On Gokyo Lake and Renjo La Pass Trek, you take flights from Kathmandu to Lukla and vice-versa. You always catch an early morning flight to Lukla due to weather complications.
