Overview
Gokyo Renjo La Pass Trek offers walking through off-beat routes in the Everest region. Since the paths are away from the mainstream, it is relatively exotic and less crowded. Also, the views offered in these routes are not less than the base camp trails.
Gokyo Renjo La Pass Trek lies in the Solukhumbu district of Nepal and is part of the Sagarmatha National Park. You need to cross over one of the high passes known as Renjo La on this trip.
The region is home to Sherpa, Rai, Gurung, and other ethnic communities. These people are living in harmony. They have friendly personalities with helpful nature.
People from these communities have opened tea houses and lodges on these routes. They offer you comfy and hygienic hospitality. They always are all smiles on their faces and are welcoming.
The Renjo La Pass is the highest destination on this trek that offers an incredible vista of the Everest range. This point also gives a great view of the Gokyo lakes with snowy peaks on the backdrop.
The pass was once a trade route to Tibet when Sherpa people walked through these routes to cross Nangpa La and reach Tibet. The Gokyo and Renjo La Pass Trek have been the best alternative for Everest Base Camp Trek.
You get to see Mt Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, Cho Oyu, Aba Dablam, and other snow-capped peaks of the Khumbu region. Also, the route offers endangered animals like red pandas, snow leopards, and many more.
Gokyo Renjo La Pass Trek begins by flying to Lukla and then trekking to Phakding. From there, you hike to Namche Bazaar and acclimatize to this happening town.
Then, you trek to Dole and then to Machhermo, where you rest for the following day’s climb. The next day, you head towards Gokyo village, where you have your lunch and hike to Fifth Lake.

Itinerary
Overnight at Kathmandu
Leaving your country for about 15 days, you catch your flight towards Nepal to begin your trek. There is only one international airport in this country, in Kathmandu, the capital city. So, this is the first place you will land.
After landing here, you head to the terminal where your guide will be waiting for you. Then they take you to your hotel and help you with the check-in procedure. Later, they leave you with an unplanned remaining day.
With no plans for the day, you can rest in your rooms or go to nearby markets or places on a mini-tour. Kathmandu looks its best during evenings when families and youngsters come out to roam.
The crowded street feels comfy in its own way, with a hint of fun in the air. While you are out, you should try out the street food as it is delicious but oily.
The second day feels overwhelming when you realize you have already reached Kathmandu. With these feelings, you wake up, freshen up, and have your breakfast.
Then you get ready and meet with your guide in the lobby, which is there to pick you up for the sightseeing tour. Today, you take a break before beginning the trek and visit the World Heritage Sites of Kathmandu.
You first drive to Kathmandu Durbar Square, one of the three squares. This place once used to be the palace of the shah and Malla kings, but now it is just an attraction point. Several temples surround this place and one of them is also a shrine for the Living Goddess, Kumari.
Then you drive to Monkey temple, also called Swayambhunath, which is the second destination. This monument lies on top of a hill that gives the complete view of Kathmandu valley. This place is also an essential point for Buddhist followers.
From there, you drive to Boudhanath, which is another Buddhist site and your third destination. There is a vast white dome with eyes and nose in the middle and is surrounded by houses. Several rooftop restaurants give a magnificent view of the stupa.
After, you head to Pashupatinath temple, the final destination of the sightseeing tour. This place has the main temple devoted to lord shiva with several small shrines of god and goddess surrounding it. The Pashupatinath area is holy ground for Hindu followers and shiva devotees.
Finally, after ending the sightseeing tour, you stop for lunch in a good restaurant. You then finish your lunch and head back to the hotel, where your guide will give you a brief explanation about the Gokyo Lake Renjo La Pass trek.
After the briefing, you can hit the shops if you missed any items needed for the trek, or you can go out and roam around the area. Sleep fast tonight as you have an excursion to begin the next day.

Best Time for Gokyo Lake Renjo La Pass Trek
There are generally two best seasons for trekking in Nepal after fall (Autumn) and winter (Spring). But Gokyo and Renjo La Pass Trek are possible in Winter and Monsoon as well.
Autumn
Autumn is a spectacular season for Gokyo Renjo La Pass Trek. The season begins in September and lasts till November. These months offer tantalizing mountain scenes and excellent climatic conditions.
During this period, these months have pleasant weather that is not so cold and hot with crystal clear visibility of peaks. The Monsoon has just departed, so it results in bluebird days and sunny climates.
The rain washes out the pollution and dust from the skies giving the clearest mountain views of the year. The temperature is mild in the earlier month but cools off by Autumn. It ranges between 5 to 30 degrees in this season, depending on the month and elevation.
The days also begin to shorten after Autumn, so the walking hours also lessen. There are occasional short storms in the high altitudes that may dump considerable snow.
Spring
Spring is the second spectacular season for Gokyo Lake Renjo La Pass Trek after Autumn. Considerably it is the best season for Mountain Climbing, so the paths tend to get packed with climbers and trekkers.
The season begins from March and lasts till May and is the best time to go to Gokyo Renjo La Pass Trek. These months offer varieties of wild flora blooming above 3000 m like rhododendron, birch, pines, and more.
Spring is a hunting paradise as well, making the high-altitude trek more exciting and comfortable. The temperature begins to warm up as the winter snow starts melting.
The winter has just ended, so it is chilly in the earlier month, but the temperature normalizes by mid to late April. The snow also completely melts by this time, opening paths to passes above 5000 m.
March is suitable for treks that do not cross high passes, while April is best for outings involving high passes. Similarly, May is great for both trekking and climbing in the Everest region.
Winter
Winter is not recommended for high pass treks, but if you wish, some particular month is suitable for Gokyo Renjo La Trek. The season begins in December and lasts till February.
The days are clear and bright but cold in the mountains. The snowfall is usually heavy in higher elevations, causing solid wind with a chilly climatic condition. The temperature differs from 6 to 12 degrees during the day and below 0 degrees during the night.
However, the earlier weeks of December and later weeks of February are suitable for Gokyo Renjo La Pass Trek. But January is not the best time as the paths are blocked with snow in high passes. However, January is suitable for lower elevation treks like Everest Base Camp.
Monsoon
Treks are possible during Monsoon season, but trekkers can face slippery and muddy routes due to heavy rainfalls. The season begins in June and lasts till August. The temperature ranges from 6 to 25 degrees during the season.
Trekking conditions during Monsoon are unfavorable but not impossible. You have to trek at the right time to avoid obstructions like landslides, floods, and others in lower regions.
However, the weather is favorable till mid-June as slight rainfall begins from here onwards. Also, the Gokyo and Renjo La Pass trek is recommended in the last week of August.
The average rainfall begins after mid-June and is high during July but cools down by late August. So, the routes are blocked in lower regions, but scanty rainfall in higher places allows users to enjoy the trek.
How Difficult are The Gokyo and Renjo La Pass Trek?
The Gokyo Renjo La Trek route has some steep terrains and slippery paths, but overall, the journey is doable and relatively moderate. The trail is well defined but covered in the snow, sometimes causing navigation difficulties for new trekkers.
However, the Gokyo Renjo La Pass Trek is not that challenging compared to other high passes of this region. The trails do not pose any particular challenges to trekkers, making them perfect for beginners as well.
But the high altitude can be an issue for a few travelers as they will be climbing above the 4500 m mark, causing altitude sickness or other medical conditions.
Factors Which Contribute to Gokyo Lake Renjo La Pass Trek Difficulty
Duration
Duration is the main factor that determines the difficulty of Gokyo Renjo La Pass Trek. It is because you can extend or shorten the itineraries. Thus more trek days make the adventure much easier than the lesser ones.
If the trek days are longer, you will walk fewer hours each day and have more acclimatization time. The standard walking duration is 5 to 6 hours each day, so depending on your travel days, the walking hours lengthen or shortens.
Gokyo and Renjo La Pass Trek 15 Days is the most common package. But if you are not assertive enough with the duration, you can always customize the itineraries and make them longer.
However, if you feel you can walk more hours without any difficulty, you can lessen the days. But remember that shorter days mean less acclimatization or none at all.
So, for beginners and first-timers in high elevation, it is better to choose longer day itineraries to be on the safe side. Do not panic. With more extended packages, you will be able to conquer the Gokyo Renjo La Pass Trek difficulty with ease.
Distance
Gokyo Renjo La Trek has an overall trekking distance of 92 km (52 miles) which takes about 15 to 18 days to achieve the trails by default. However, some trekkers complete the trip in fewer days, depending on one’s strength and stamina.
On this 15 Day Gokyo and Renjo La Pass Trek, you cover 10 to 15 km each day, but most professionals cover 7 to 9 km per day. So, If you are a relaxed walker or novice, do not compete with them as it can strain you down.
The trek starts from Lukla and takes you through a less-traveled path. These trails could be pretty harsh and challenging, but it does not remain the same throughout the Gokyo Lake Renjo La Pass trek.
Sometimes, you get to walk on smooth trails as well. Also, this trek can be combined with Everest Base Camp Trek to make it lengthier and more demanding.
Altitude Sickness
Altitude Sickness affects people that aim to climb higher altitudes where the air pressure and oxygen level are low. The condition is irrespective of gender or age group and can happen to anyone, but not everybody suffers.
Altitude Sickness has a significant influence on how complex the Gokyo Renjo La Pass Trek will be. The highest elevation you will step is Renjo La Pass at 5360 m above sea level, and the chances of AMS are high at this height.
The journey commences from 2860 m altitude, and some trekkers can also suffer from altitude sickness at this elevation. With each gain, the oxygen level lowers, so you should move carefully as it can be life-threatening if ignored.
Some of the mild symptoms of AMS are headache, nausea, dizziness, shortness of breath with exertion, difficulty in sleeping, loss of appetite, rapid pulse, and many more.
If you find any AMS symptoms, it is best to stop climbing and head down to a lower altitude for comfort. If you keep continuing the trek disregarding them, it can create grave illnesses like coma and respiratory failure.
Some severe symptoms are losing consciousness, confusion, and numbness. With worsening of the symptoms, you might even have to forfeit the trek.
Weather and Temperature
The Gokyo Renjo La Pass Trek commences from a lower elevation where the temperature is moderately warm. But as you climb to the upper region, the wind turns icy and frozen.
The weather of the Himalayas changes without any warning, so you can notice a climatic change every hour. Thus, the constantly changing weather adds more difficulty to this trek.
Along with the weather, the rain and snowfall also pose a nuisance during the trek. In winter, the paths are shielded with snow and can cause navigating issues. At the same time, the routes are slippery and muddy in the monsoon that can cause injury if hasty.
Not just weather but temperature also adds to the difficulty in the trek. The degrees tend to fall rapidly in higher elevated areas. So, if you travel, especially in winter, then the climatic condition is freezing.
Physical Stamina
On this Gokyo and Renjo La Pass Trek, you will walk through steep terrains and rugged paths for at least 6 hours each day. So, stamina is a must when traveling to an altitude above 5000m.
The trails are quite challenging and tricky, so you need to have the suitable physical endurance to finish the trek. Thus, increase your physical stamina before the actual Gokyo Renjo La Pass trek to be beneficial.
The trails will seem harsh without a good physique with all the ups, downs, twists, and turns. So, be physically prepared to make the trek faster and easier than usual.
Types of Trekkers
The difficulty level is also determined by the type of trekker you are. If visiting Gokyo Renjo La Pass is your first trek, the routes will be very challenging.
This trek is not that big for trekkers with previous experiences as they are familiar with the trekking ways. But for beginners, all the routes will seem new and extra strenuous.
Accommodation Facilities
In any trek, accommodation and food facilities play a crucial role as a filled tummy and a good night’s sleep is necessary for the next day’s hike. However, the tea houses are crowded with climbers, trekkers, and porters in peak months, so finding rooms in lodges might get tricky.
With minimum available rooms, you might even have to share rooms with fellow travelers. Sometimes, trekkers even have to sleep in the lobby or kitchen floors due to less availability of rooms.
Also, due to the crowds, you won’t be able to enjoy the trek to its fullest because the staff won’t be able to provide traditional hospitality. They will not have time to care for each and every trekker that visits the inn.
Weight and Luggage
The burden of heavy luggage is another major challenge of Gokyo Renjo La Pass Trek. You have to walk long, steep and rugged trails, so carrying heavy-weight luggage will be rugged for you.
Imagining having a good time while carrying a heavy load on your back will be a dream. It will be a tedious yet highly elevated trek, so do not carry bulky and unnecessary items in your luggage.
You should avoid packing items that are not important, even if they are lightweight. These factors will distract you during the trek.
Safety Tips for Gokyo Renjo La Trek
Choose the right time.
Before beginning the trek, you should thoroughly research about the seasons as it plays the prominent role of making the trip successful. Among all the occasions, Spring and Autumn are the most suitable ones for Gokyo and Renjo La Pass trek.
You should select the right time that offers a clear blue sky with a mild temperature allowing you to explore the region. So, choosing the right trekking time helps you overcome severe climatic problems.
However, you should avoid months where the trails are wet and covered in snow, making the walk uncomfortable. So, choose the time when views are unobstructed and offer you good photographs.
Be mentally prepared
Gokyo Renjo La trek is a well-known destination with moderate to challenging routes. So, it would be in the best interest for you to have advanced physical fitness with strong mental capability.
The trek would be best if you can build up your strength and mental health to the fullest before it begins. Doing this would help you to clearly understand the purpose of the trek and focus on it.
Thus, learn to be patient and be sure to make plans thoroughly. Being mentally prepared in advance will help ease the trek and let you enjoy it without worrying.
Train Ahead of Time
People of different physical abilities and ages can make the trek to Gokyo Renjo La Trek. But to make it more comfortable, you need to have good physical conditions.
We do not mean like triathletes, by an excellent physical condition, but you should have enough endurance and stamina to finish the trek. So, for this, you need to train ahead of time to reach high places.
Trekkers can do strength and endurance training to help them power up their muscles. At the same time, elevation training can make them better at handling altitude gain.
Some of these training are long walks or hiking in uneven or hilly terrains, walking on a treadmill, slow walk with no incline, jogging, swimming, cycling, and many more.
You can train and prepare yourself two weeks before the actual trek without hiring a personal trainer.
Acclimatize
It is necessary to acclimatize when traveling above 3500 m altitude. Acclimatization is an added rest day on your trip to catch some breath before doing the further climb.
You don't actually sit or sleep during the rest day but instead, go on short hikes and explore around. Acclimatization helps you evolve with the oxygen level in higher places and prevent altitude sickness.
If you keep climbing without acclimatizing, your body might not adjust to the above air pressure. So, always acclimatize even if you have prior experience.
It is best to add one or two acclimatization days according to your trekking itinerary. If the trek is 7 to 11 days long, add one acclimatization, and if it has more days, add two.
Break in your shoes beforehand
If you are thinking of getting a brand new shoe for the trek, always make sure you wear them 2 to 3 times before the trip. You do not want to break in your shoes during the walk as it might cause aching feet, chafed skin, and blisters.
It is because going through these slight injuries might dampen your experience. So, take your time to wear the shoes around as it will help you break them in and make sure it fits.
Wear them around town, house, or couple hikes to let you know if the shoes will pinch, stress, or rub your feet. These are the best ways to break in your shoes beforehand.
Stay within luggage weight limits.
This trek does not last a day or two, so you will be needing to carry everything significant during the tour. But it doesn't mean to over-pack and brings along unnecessary items as well.
There are strict weight limitations, and you should stay within your luggage mass limits. You will have a baggage bearer to carry your bags, but they can only take 10 to 15 kgs, so bringing more will load them.
If you don't want to hire porters, you will have to carry your bags, so overloading the bags will make the trek challenging. Thus, it is best to take essential goods only.
Hire Guide or Porters
It is in your best interest to hire a guide or porters when visiting the Himalayas. The weather is never predictable, so you will have a fellow companion to help you.
You can hire either one of them or both of them. They are a bit expensive, but they have been walking on these trails for years, so they know all the shortcuts and locals.
Hiring guides or porters will also help you get discounts on accommodations as they have good relationships with the owners. But make sure your guide and porter can speak multi-language for better communication.
They will be a great companion and will keep you entertained with their stories and talks.
Eat Hygienic Food
Traveling into the mountains is not a field trip, so you need to take care of your health as well. During your trekking duration, it is best to avoid junk and unhealthy foods.
You should consume foods that are hygienic and give you the strength to continue your climb. During your Gokyo and Renjo La Pass trek, avoid drinking alcohol, smoking, and eating meat.
The dry meat is flown to Lukla and transferred to the tea houses, so it won't be fresh, causing health problems after intake. So, it is recommended to eat vegetables as they are organic and produced in the field.
Stay Hydrated
It is necessary to stay hydrated on the Gokyo Lake Renjo La Pass trek, so make sure to drink plenty of water. You might be trekking in cold temperatures, but walking at a high altitude will affect your body.
You will be trekking 6 to 8 hours each day in the rough terrains, so you will be sweating a lot, thus needing to hydrate frequently. You need to drink about 2 to 4 liters of water each day.
If you don't feel like drinking, then you can at least take a sip but don't let your body dehydrate. You can carry flavors, electrolyte tablets, or teas if you are not much of a water drinker.
Bring a water bottle and purification pills.
Never forget to pack your water bottle and thermos before the trek, as it will be pretty helpful. You can purchase bottled water on the way, but they will cost about USD 1 or USD 2, depending on the place.
Buying bottled water will not only be expensive, but you will not find shops in every direction. So, if you bring along your bottle, you can at least fill them with natural water or from a reservoir.
Also, carry a purification tablet as the water is from an unknown source and can affect your health. The purification tablet kills the harmful bacteria present in the water and makes it drinkable.
It does not mean the water is not clean, but as foreigners are not used to natural water, they might get diarrhea or other infection.
Always carry cash
Many Himalayan parts are still not fully developed, so there are no online transactions available. Also, finding banks and ATMs is impossible in the higher altitudes. You will find the last ATM in Namche Bazaar during this trek.
After this point, you will have to carry enough cash to pay for your additional needs. Also, bring the country's current currency as they do not accept dollars, pounds, etc.
You have to change your money in lower regions as there are no exchange centers in the upper areas.
