Itinerary

Day 1
Drive to Pokhara
Pokhara Altitude: 822 m above sea level

Drive Duration: 7 to 9 hours

Drive Distance: 200 km

Overnight at Pokhara

Accommodation: Three Star Hotel

The Mardi Himal Trek 8 Days begins with your ride to Pokhara from Kathmandu. The distance is not very long, but Nepal's terrain and road quality make it seem far. People who are short on time can fly there as well.

Your trip begins after breakfast, so fill your tummies, pack your bags, and wait for the guide. After their arrival, you board the tourist bus and head towards the beautiful city, Pokhara.

Getting out of the city, you are welcomed by the beautiful landscapes of green hills, lush jungles, and more. The surroundings get peaceful as you drive further from the capital.

You drive alongside the Trishuli river for most of the day. There are several big towns and small villages between the way, and you stop in one of these places for lunch.

After driving for hours, you reach Muglin, a mid-point between Kathmandu and Pokhara. From here, you cross a bridge that leads you towards your destination. The further you drive, you get to see farmlands and barren lands.

As you get closer to Pokhara, you catch a glance at Mount Annapurna and Machhapuchhre. Finally, after half a day's ride, you arrive at the marvelous city of lakes.

After reaching here, you check-in to your rooms, and the rest of the time is unplanned. So, you can freshen up and go out on an explore around the city. If you know cycling, you can hire one and go on evening rides inside the town.

But if you prefer less hustle, then you can go on walks along the sidepath of Fewa Lake. It is better to sleep early today as you have to begin your journey the next day.
Day 2
Drive to Phedi and trek to Pothana
Phedi Altitude: 1130 m above sea level

Drive Duration: 1 to 1.5 hours

Drive Distance: 18.7 km

Pothana Altitude: 1890 m above sea level

Walking Hours: 3 to 4 hours

Walking Distance: 6 km

Overnight at Pothana

Accommodation: Tea House

The initial thing you do after waking up is freshening up and visit the Fewa lake. Then returning to the hotel, you have your breakfast and begin the trip towards Phedi.

The route follows you through the Baglung Highway and leads you along the bumpy and dusty road. The drive duration is not very long, but you might feel it far more than normal due to graveled terrains.

Your Mardi Himal Trek 8 Days begin after arriving at Phedi as you walk your way to Pothana. There are several small shops in this small village where the local owners try to sell you stuff.

Avoiding them, the trek begins by climbing intimidating stairs all the way up. Continuing the upward walk for about one and half hours, you come across other local shops in the area.

You then wander past traditional villages and reach a flat stretch of land from where the view ahead looks awesome. This place looks like a grazing and picnic spot for the local villagers.

Soon afterward, you arrive at Dhampus, where you stop for your lunch. Fill your tummy cause the road gets erratic from here onwards. After lunch, you first descend along the beautiful forest trail. Then continue walking up and down the varied terrain viewing beautiful landscapes till Pothana.

You check in to your rooms and rest or head out to explore the valley. This village is quite touristy with plenty of accommodation available. Pothana might be at a lower elevation, but it sure gets chilly here. The lush green valley looks amazing from the tea houses.
Day 3
Trek from Pothana to Forest Camp (2554m)
Forest Camp Altitude: 2554 m above sea level

Walking Hours: 6 to 7 hours

Walking Distance: 7.9 km

Overnight at Forest Camp

Accommodation: Tea House

After breakfast, you pack your bags and follow a rocky path out of the village. The trail soon changes from rocky to dirt to a hardly noticeable forest path. There are not many markers in the trails, so stick with your group if you do not want to get lost.

You first climb the trails for an hour or so, following the off-beat path and reach Deurali. This place gives you a clear view of Fewa lake, Pokhara valley, and a couple of magnificent mountains (Annapurna and Dhaulagiri). Then you walk the trails that lead you through the jungle.

The destination today is a forest camp, so according to its name, the trail is densely populated with forests. You are surrounded by greenery throughout the day, which is quite an experience.

The forests offer birch, rhododendron, oak, hemlock, maple, and more. Also, the tree shades keep you cool and breezy whilst the air is fresh and rich with the organic smell.

After about an hour, the trail begins to get steep, creating a challenge for the trekkers. Continuing the trek, you walk on top of a ridge, then drop halfway and slowly gain altitude back to Forest Camp.

Forest camp is a wide-open green area that has few accommodations for stay. After checking in one of the tea houses, you can head out and lie in the grass while enjoying the surroundings.
Day 4
Forest Camp to High Camp (3550m)
High Camp Altitude: 3550 m above sea level

Walking Hours: 8 hours

Walking Distance: 12.2 km

Overnight at High Camp

Accommodation: Tea House

The day starts early today as you head to High Camp from Forest Camp. After breakfast, you continue the Mardi Himal Trek 8 Days through the forested path, but it is a bit firmer than the previous day.

The tree line has changed from dense to a bit shorter spaced out trees like mosses, shrubs, and more. Continue walking, and you come across larger areas covered in colorful rhododendrons.

Walking through this magical forest, you emerge to Low Camp, a wide flat land offering a clear view of Machhapuchhre (Mount Fishtail). The mountain looks mesmerizing, becoming the center of attention next to the forests.

Low Camp is also a stop destination for a few trekkers, where you can view the epic sunrise and sunset over the Annapurna. But our rest stop is high Camp, so you head back to the tracks after a hefty lunch.

The trails from here are steep, so be cautious. The ground is rocky, plus continues to get steeper with each climb. Moving ahead, the route slowly becomes barren with trees thin out and rocky paths leading towards High Camp.

High Camp lies above 3550 m, making it a bit chilly, so you can head to the fireside area for warmth after checking in. The sunset view is quite spectacular from this point.

Sleep early as an exciting day is waiting for you tomorrow.
Day 5
Trek to Mardi Himal Base Camp (4350m)
Mardi Himal Base Camp Altitude: 4350 m above sea level

Overall Walking Hours: 7 to 8 hours

Overnight at High Camp

Accommodation: Tea House

The day starts fast today as you have to set out on an ascent to make a final high climb of Mardi Himal Trek 8 days. You begin the trek to Mardi Himal Base Camp after a healthy breakfast.

Heading out on the journey, the impressive mountain view is gradually replaced by the rocky terrains. Walking along the ridge, you take the slow and steady path over an unclear trail.

The ascend is not too difficult but not too easy as well while hiking through the unseen path. You need to be careful as there are many death-end paths on this trip.

You make your way through a large area filled with boulders and continue climbing in the trails to the base camp. The first to catch your eyes is the magnificent views under the clear blue sky.

The place offers you the sight of Annapurna base camp on one side and Machhapuchhre on the other. The way to the base camp makes this 8 Day Mardi Himal Trek truly one of the best.

Then, you have your lunch at the base and continue to make your way back to High Camp. Following the same route to return, you stay the night in High Camp.
Day 6
Trek to Siding Village
Siding Altitude: 1750 m

Walking Hours: 6 to 7 hours

Walking Distance: 8.5 km

Overnight at Siding

Accommodation: Tea House

The trek to Siding from high Camp is quite easy today, and you can take your time to enjoy the beauty before beginning the journey. After a delicious breakfast, you retrace your way back to Low Camp.

The trails down to Siding are very memorable as you pass several villages and rice terraces. The trip today seems beautiful in many ways due to the pristine rural farming areas.

Following the routes, you stop at one of the points for lunch and refreshment. Then continuing the walk downhill, make your way through lush green jungles and farmlands to Siding Village.

Siding Village is also a starting and ending point for trekkers who are in a hurry due to less time. You can find vehicles that take you back to Pokhara from here as well.
Day 7
Trek to Saidighatta and drive to Pokhara
Saidighatta Altitude: 1206 m

Walking Hours: 3 to 4 hours

Pokhara Altitude: 822 m above sea level

Drive Duration: 1 to 1.5 hours

Overnight at Pokhara

With adventure and excitement, the Mardi Himal Trek 8 Days is coming to an end. Today you trek down to Saidighatta from Siding after having your final breakfast in this region.

Following the trails through rice fields and dense jungles, you make your way downhill. Along the routes, you will pass several traditional villages inhabited by the Gurung community.

With this making a steep descent, you reach Saidighatta, another traditionally rich Gurung village. From here, you catch the vehicle back to Pokhara, following the Baglung highway.

After arriving at Pokhara, you have the rest of the day off, so you can go boating, sightseeing, or do other activities available in this city. Pokhara is a chill tourist destination and escapes place for locals, so enjoy your time here.

Best Time To Go Trekking to Mardi Himal

Mardi Himal Trek faces four seasons: Monsoon, Spring, Winter, and Autumn. All seasons fall under different months showing various shades of nature's beauty to the trekkers.

Mardi Himal Trek

Autumn

Autumn falls from September to November and is the best time to enjoy the Mardi Himal Trek. This period is known as post-monsoon, offering clear blue skies after the summer rain.

The forest trails during this trek welcome you with oak trees and beautiful shades of rhododendron. The weather is sunny and bright with no wet and muddy trails.

The temperature ranges from 10 to 20 degrees during autumn. It reaches up to 20 degrees during the daytime and drops to 10 degrees by night. The trails have favorable conditions, so you can pack limited clothes.

Spring

Spring falls from March to May and is the best time to experience trekking in the greenery of Mardi Himal. This period is known as pre-monsoon, offering the growth of various flowers and plants.

The transition from cold to hot changes the surroundings making it clean and fresh. The skies are clear, providing visitors with stunning views of the landscapes and mountains.

The temperature ranges from 5 to 17 degrees during spring. It reaches up to 17 degrees during the days while drops to 5 degrees by night. However, there is light rainfall during the earlier days, so carry waterproof clothes.

Off-Season for the Trek

Monsoon/ Summer

Monsoon and Summer fall under the same months, so it begins in June and ends in August. There is both scorching hot and continuous rainfall in the Mardi Himal trails during this season.

The routes heat up during the first month and begin to have slight showers by the next. It rains almost every day, making the trails slippery, muddy, and hard to walk on.

However, trekking to Mardi Himal during summer is suitable as it gives an awesome experience with an eye-catching view of your surroundings. Also, the pleasant sky and weather conditions enhance the experience.

The temperature ranges from about 25 to 15 degrees during summer, while it ranges from 22 to 5 degrees during monsoon. So, be sure to carry rain boots, jackets, waterproof bags, pants, and trekking boots.

Winter

Winter falls from December to February and is the least preferred time for trekking in Mardi Himal. But, if you can handle cold and dry climatic conditions, then it is the best time for you.

Most of the trails of the upper region are covered in snow. So you might not reach your desired destination and have to return halfway due to road blockage. But the snow-covered peaks and valleys are worth the visit even though it is chilly.

The temperature ranges from 10 to negative 6 degrees during the months. The temperature for day and night keeps dropping as you reach higher places. So, pack bulky clothes that can keep you warm this winter.

Accommodation Like in Mardi Himal Trek

Accommodations are rich and elegant before Forest Camp. You can book separate rooms for yourself and find ones with attached bathrooms. Several services and facilities are available in lower regions like running hot water, room services, wifi, etc.

After reaching Forest Camp, the accommodation gets basic with shared rooms, bathrooms, and thin foam mattresses. Also, there are fewer services available as the upper areas are still underdeveloped. The running hot water is unavailable here onwards, but you do get buckets of hot water.

Food Like in Mardi Himal Trek

You will find typical Nepalese food in the trails of Mardi Himal though there is not a high range of offerings compared to other routes. Dal and Bhat is the primary food, followed by pancakes, chop suey, and pasta.

The taste might not be like Michelin star quality, but it will be worth the price. The majority of products are fresh as they are produced in the farms right there. So, try it out.

Keep in mind that you will burn a lot of calories during your trek, so keep yourself hydrated. Also, eat food that has good calories, is filling and healthy, and can keep you fueled for your walk.

You will find plenty of fresh vegetarian food such as eggs, milk, cheese, and more. There is meat available as well, but they have been frozen, so they might not be in the best condition.

You can also find varieties of drinks like soda, coffee, beer, hot lemon, tea, water, and more. The prices for foods and drinks go up as you reach further to High Camp.

The foods are a bit expensive due to the terrain and lack of transportation. So, you can pack along with your own snacks like an energy bar, dried nuts, or some other treats.

Mardi Himal Trek

Permits required on the trek

Mardi Himal Trek requires two different permits to enter the region and complete the trek. They are:

  • ACAP (Annapurna Conservation Area Entry Permit):

This permit covers the overall area of Annapurna National Park and is only valid for one entry and exit. So, you can use it for as many treks as long as you do not exit the park. The permit costs NPR 3000 (USD 30).

  • TIMS (Trekker Information Management System Card)

This card helps to identify the trekkers through registration checkpoints during the trek. The card costs NPR 2000 (USD 20).

Both permits can be purchased at the Tourist Information Center from either Kathmandu or Pokhara. The offices are open from 10 am to 5 pm and are closed on weekends and holidays.

These permits can be used until they receive an exit stamp. So, you can combine other treks with the Mardi Himal Trek and make it longer plus adventurous. Also, the cards are non-transferable.

How difficult is the Mardi Himal Trip?

Mardi Himal Trek is an average level trekking destination whose terrain requires no ropes, ice picks, or vertical climbing. But the trails are quite steep and rocky, from High Camp to Base Camp.

The trails are not paved, so they are rough, rocky, and even graveled from the forest camp onwards. During heavy rainfalls, the paths get muddy and slippery, so watch out for your steps.

The difficulty is common in any trek, and it is mostly due to altitude, weather, fitness, and terrain. The hike from high Camp to base camp will be relatively the hardest part.

Another difficulty will be while descending from Low Camp to Siding as there are many steps involved. However, the overall journey is doable and can be completed with ease.

Difficulties You Might Face During the Trek

Even though Mardi Himal Trek is a moderate level trek, there are various other factors that contribute to its difficulties, and some of them are:

Duration and Distance

The journey to Mardi Himal begins from Pokhara, as you drive to Phedi from there and then trek to Pothana afterward. The Mardi Himal Trek takes about 4 to 8 days off your time, but the complete length of your itinerary changes along with your path choice.

The Mardi Himal trek covers an overall distance of around 41 km that requires 5 to 7 hours of walking duration. But if you choose fewer days, then you will need to walk for 8 to 9 hours each day to finish the trip on time. So, the walking duration can be challenging for new trekkers.

Altitude

Altitude sickness is a growing concern that is unavoidable while going on treks. Different bodies give different responses to the altitude, so it might not be a problem for every trekker.

The base camp is the highest place you will reach on this journey, and it lies at 4350 m. The tallest point of the trek is not very high compared to other treks, but it can still cause altitude sickness for some.

Some of the signs of acute mountain sickness are shortness of breath, diarrhea, nausea, headaches, difficulty in sleeping, and more. You should not take this lowly as it can be fatal for health, so inform your guide or companion immediately if you are having problems.

You can not control suffering from AMS, but you can use preventive measures to handle it:

  • Trek to lower regions or halt your journey.
  • Drink 3 to 4-liter water every day during the trek
  • Acclimatize before climbing to higher places
  • Avoid smoking or drinking alcohol
  • Consume high-calorie food
  • Rest after climbing every 600 to 900 m.
  • Do not try to reach higher altitudes at once.

Weather and Temperature

Weather and temperature are the major deciding factors on how the trek will turn out to be. The seasons of autumn and spring are preferable for trekking in Mardi Himal. Trekking during these times has less harsh conditions and a better atmosphere.

In contrast, winter and monsoon are the less preferred seasons for trekking due to the bad weather conditions. Most trekkers prefer to avoid the months that fall under these seasons.

Trekking is quite a challenge at this time due to cold and rainy weather. The routes are covered in snow in higher regions during winter, and it is slippery starting from lower places during the monsoon.

Accommodation During peak seasons

Accommodations are available throughout the Mardi Himal Trek 8 Days. But depending on the season and month you travel, finding one might be the problem.

You will find tons of lodges and hotels in Pokhara, but they can be a bit expensive. However, you get several services with them, so it makes up for the price.

Similarly, the routes are newly opened, but you will find tea houses in every destination. But they might not be enough during peak seasons. You might need to sleep in the lobby or kitchen floors due to packed rooms.

The cost of the inns is fairly inexpensive, but they can rise during peak seasons due to a lack of rooms. So, it is best to pre-book rooms to avoid these circumstances.

Physical Fitness

Mardi Himal Trek does not require any prior experience, so many trekkers do not prepare beforehand for the trip. Thus, they end up getting tired easily and holding back the group.

No matter if it is a day hike or a 2 to 3 days trek, you need to be physically fit to do this trek. Mardi Himal doesn't have harsh terrain, but it sure is challenging. You need huge stamina to walk uphill and downhill each day for 6 to 7 hours.

Also, trekkers need to mentally prepare themself to avoid anxiety or panic attacks. Anything can happen in the mountains, so make yourself strong.

Type of Trekkers

The trek hugely depends on the type of trekker you are as well. Mardi Himal Trek will be easy for people who have earlier trekking experience in the Everest region or high altitudes.

But if you are new to trekking, it might be difficult to walk for hours or cope with the altitude. It does not mean trekkers with no experience can not trek, but it will be more challenging for them.

So, if you are up for some challenge and can prepare yourself for the Mardi Himal trek, no worries, you will complete it without much hassle.

Safety Tips for Mardi Himal Trek

The demand for Mardi Himal Trek is increasing rapidly, but you need to prepare yourself for the trek. Preparing right might help you finish the trek peacefully, so some of the safety tips for this trek are:

Begin your training early

It is best to begin your training weeks or even months before the actual one. Starting your training early will do no harm but instead, increase your fitness and build.

You need to prepare your body for the trek, and it can only be helped by doing exercises. Trekkers do not require heavy exercises, but light ones will make up for it.

You can go cycling, swimming, short hikes, walk for hours, do meditation, and many more. You can combine them with your regular activities to save time. Training might help avoid the risk of injuring yourself.

Bring along the right footwear.

Trekkers are recommended to choose appropriate footwear having good quality. The shoes should be able to protect your ankle and not irritate your Achilles tendon.

While searching for trekking shoes, select the ones whose ankle cuffs are scooped away at the back. Also, try and walk in them for a week or so before the trek to know its comfort.

Hydrate yourself frequently

The body requires fluid substance throughout the trek. And during hot weather conditions, you will need to drink more water compared to during cold climates. You should carry the bottle along with you and drink about 3 to 4 liters of water each day. Hydrate yourself frequently to avoid dehydration and altitude sickness.

Advance booking

Always book your rooms in advance as it will be hard to find one during spring and autumn. If you do not pre-book, then you might have to sleep in the lobby or kitchen and sometimes even pay higher than the normal charge.

Carry cash

There are no ATM machines or banks available in higher places, so take out cash enough for the entire trip in Pokhara or Kathmandu. You can exchange money in lower regions as well because other currencies cannot be used in upper places.

Mardi Himal Trek Cost

The Mardi Himal Trek Cost depends on several factors like duration, the season for the trek, personal costs, accommodation, and more. However, if you choose to travel with a company, then you can select packages that cover the basic costs of the trip.

In comparison to Annapurna Circuit Trek or Everest Base Camp Trek, the Mardi Himal Trek is cheaper and less crowded. The overall cost is roughly around USD 500 to USD 700. Our package costs $650.

Normally, the food costs about $3 to $7 each day, while accommodation ranges from $5 to $7 per day, depending on the altitude. Likewise, bottled water costs about $1 to $3 in the routes. You might need to pay around $3 if you use extra facilities like wifi, charging, and hot water.

You also need to carry extra cash for personal use like buying snacks, souvenirs, etc., as you will pay for things that are not included in the package. Check out more details here.
