Overview

Jomsom Muktinath trekking is the most popular trekking trail in Annapurna region. The trek is also a part of Annapurna Circuit Trek. This is a beautiful trek exploring the hundreds of years old monastery, caves, local tribes and magnificent landscapes along the trek. The trail covers diverse terrain from the high altitude arid zone north of Jomsom through to the sub-tropical heat and terraced rice paddies at the end of the trek.

The Jomsom Muktinath Trekking starts with a flight from Pokhara to Jomsom.Located at a height of 2,800 meters, Jomsom is the district headquarters of Mustang district. The trek starts with a walk along the river bank with spectacular Nilgiri and Tukuche peak on the horizon. The trail takes the trekkers to Muktinath via Kagbeni, a Tibetan village.Muktinath temple is one of the most important highlights of the trek. Muktinath temple carries a great significance for both Hindus and the Buddhist. The name Muktinath literally means- the land of Salvation and is visited by thousands of Hindu and Buddhist Pilgrims every year.

The trail then passes through Marpha -the village of orchards and Tatopani Natural hot spring to reach the beautiful Magar village of Ghorepani where the most spectacular mountain views can be observed. Further from Ghorepani the trail continues to Nayapul where the trek concludes. The scenery of the trail ranges from the forests of brilliant red rhododendrons in Ghorepani to rocky cliffs and desert of Mustang.

The Jomsom Muktinath Trekking rightfully displays the country’s spectacular geographical diversity as the trail traverses the deep valleys, high mountains and wide variety of terrains; from subtropical jungle to a high but deserted landscape resembling the Tibetan Plateau. The diverse terrain is also the home for diverse culture and people. The diverse landscapes and cultures found along this trekking route give the perfect insight into the rural life of Nepalese people.

The mountain views during the trek is spectacular as Dhaulagiri, Mt. Nilgiri, Mt. Annapurna south, Mt. Annapurna II, Annapurna III, Mt. Annapurna IV, Mt. Hiunchuli, Machhapuchhare, Tukuche Peak, Lamjung Himal, etc. are visible. The trail actually crosses to the other side of the main Himalayan range which offers a different view of the northern flanks.

The Jomsom Muktinath trekking is an ideal for the one who want to explore the diversity of Annapurna region without doing the full Annapurna Circuit trek. The Trek can be done year around as the most of the trekking region for the trek falls in the rain-shadow area.
