Overview
Nepal is a land of impressive natural beauty. From sky-high mountains to deep valleys, gorges, and serene lakes, there’s a magnetic view guaranteed for all kinds of visitors arriving here. It has many scenic spots, fascinating cultural sites, centuries-old architecture, and history that stuns visitors. Everest Base Camp and Kala Patthar trek gives you chance to experience all in one trip.
The unique topography of Nepal makes it one of the most beautiful places for hiking. It has dozens of mountains, natural parks, and hilltops to climb. But, the best remains to be Everest Base Camp as it unfolds wild beauty with lots of adventures and cultural feasts.
Speaking about culture, the people of mixed ethnicities can be found in Khumbu Valley, especially in the lower parts of the region. However, in the highland, Sherpa people seem to be predominant with tens and thousands of people.
Most of the inhabitants religiously follow Tibetan culture and celebrate the colorful Mani Rimdu festival in October. Trekkers can also find lots of Buddhist monasteries, Chortens, and mani walls, which reflect the old civilizations and traditions of the Sherpa people.
Locals in Khumbu are very kind and welcoming to the guests. They show friendly gestures, putting trekkers at ease instead of making them feel unwanted. Visitors can participate in religious festivals, social gatherings, ritual dances, and songs, embracing the culture.
Everest Base Camp is one of the most popular hiking destinations in Nepal, with a side trek of Kala Patthar. It’s probably the best and closest where trekkers can get to watch the magnificent Mt. Everest and its surrounding snow peaks, including Ama Dablam, Thamserku, and Lhotse.
With Nepal Eco Adventure, travelers will get to explore many hidden places and viewpoints that only a few hikers have been to. At the end of the hike, they’ll get to witness the white landscapes, towering rock hills, shimmering glaciers, and icefalls.
Lying in the north of Khumbu, Everest Base Camp is accessed after a short flight to Lukla. A weeks-long trek follows it through above the ridge and down the valley before walking the level ground.
Everest Base Camp and Kala Patthar trek start from Lukla, passing numerous Himalayan villages, including Manjo, Pheriche, and Lobuche. It has the trekkers ascending steep hills, walking into the deep forest, and making their way from the edge of the valley.
From Lobuche, they’ll be traversing jagged trails with rocks and the frozen lakebed from Gorakshep. They’ll have to walk over boulders and ascend the glacial valleys to end up at Everest Base Camp. Trekkers will climb Kala Patthar right before returning to the village.
They’ll take a 2-3 hours hike from Gorakshep to arrive at the mountain and watch the stunning views. After the sightseeing, they’ll climb down the trails and pass several villages to get back to Lukla. From there, we’ll take an early morning flight to Kathmandu along with the crew of Nepal Eco Adventure.
Note: We have designed 12 days EBC Kala Patthar trek itinerary if you want to skip the day tour and just join the trek.

Itinerary
Freshen up and get some rest before we meet in the evening for a short overview of the trek. You can do further questioning with your trek leader and clear them out. Check all the items required before the day ends, so if there are any items left to purchase, you can do it while in Thamel.
Most wooden-carved temples and statues here reflect the traditional Newari art and culture. Hanuman Dhoka, Kal Bhairav, and Kumari Ghar are some of the oldest and most significant structures you’ll explore during the visit to this UNESCO world heritage site.
Next on the day tour, we’ll stop at Swayambhunath, one of the significant religious sites in Kathmandu. It’s a sacred pilgrimage for Nepalese, but especially Buddhists who frequently visit the monastery to pay their respect.
Swayambhunath lies in the west of Kathmandu and sits atop a hillock overlooking the Kathmandu Valley. It also goes by the name of Monkey temple as you can find lots of these animals in the jungle. On this trip, you’ll get to see numerous small stupas, Chortens, and Buddhist scripture lying inside the religious complex.
After exploring the monastery, we’ll hop on our private jeep and head to another Buddhist stupa. It’s as stunning as Swayambhunath, not as old as it. During the trip, you can witness the construction of more than 50 small gompas around the main stupa.
Prayer flags, mani wheels, and non-stop chants accompanied by musical instruments are the major highlights of the Boudhanath Stupa tour. After exploring the sites, we’ll return to the hotel, but we’ll drop by Pashupatinath Temple on the way.
Walking Hours: 2-3 hrs
Overnight at: a lodge
We’ll take a flight to Lukla early in the morning as the weather is beautiful around this time. Following a clear sky, we’ll get to enjoy some incredible views of high mountain ranges, picture-perfect villages, and vibrant valleys.
It shall take us between 30-40 minutes to arrive at the town, hovering above the vast meadows. After the flight lands, we’ll take a short lunch break and then start walking the trails. The trek from Lukla to Phakding will last 2-3, going at a slow pace.
The trail runs off the mountainside on the left bank of Dudh Koshi River, which puts up a stunning view for most of today’s journey. After several ups and downs, we’ll finally reach Phakding, where there are many lodges and hotels for guests to stay.
Walking Hours: 5-6 hrs
Overnight at: a guest house
After getting enough night sleep and a delicious breakfast, we’ll now leave for the trek to Namche Bazaar. The trek kicks off with a gentle uphill walk beside the terrace farm until Bengar. Followed by several ups and downs along the way, the trail stops at Sagarmatha National Park, where the entrance fee is collected.
From there, we’ll cross the suspension bridge over the Dudh Koshi River and pass the riverbank village of Jorsale. After trekking the zigzagged paths, the trail runs straight uphill, which takes anywhere from 2-3 hours.
After navigating the rugged trails, we’ll arrive at a police checkpoint where the tickets are collected. After a few more walks, the trail ends at Namche Bazaar, one of the famous Sherpa towns in Khumbu. It’s a beautiful village with many small gompas, chortens, and prayer flags. The village also boasts many tea houses, lodges, and hotels for travelers to spend the night.
The trail heading to the viewpoint is upward with huge rocks and dust, taking us somewhere between 1-2 hours. After reaching the clifftop, you’ll get the first close snap of Mt. Everest along with Ama Dablam and Thamserku.
We’ll also witness the deep gorges, verdant forests, and rolling landscapes while exploring the site. After spending quality time at Syangboche, we’ll retrace the steps back to the village and stay the night there.
Walking Hours: 5-6 hrs
Overnight at: a tea house
After breakfast, we’ll continue our trek with a gentle descent through Trashinga. From here, the trail gets steep and runs endlessly through the densely forested area. After a level ground walk for about 20 minutes, we’ll see our pace increasing.
The trek is easy and relaxing for about 1-2 hours, and then it goes downhill, losing all the elevation gained. We’ll arrive at a small teahouse where many travelers stop and have lunch by crossing the old wooden bridge.
After getting some much-needed rest and a delicious meal here, we’ll push ourselves for another 2-3 hours walk, but this time the trail is steep. As we get close to Tengboche, you’ll get to see many ancient chortens and lofty hills along the way.
As soon as we arrive at the village, you’ll get to watch the astonishing view of Imja Khola and the high ridge across the ravine of Kunde. Adding to the beauty of the village, Ama Dablam provides equally amazing scenes at the backdrop. Overnight stay in a tea house.
Walking Hours: 5-6 hrs
Overnight at: a tea house
Getting up before dawn, we’ll clean ourselves and then visit the Tengboche monastery to attend the morning prayer. We’ll perform the rituals and offer our prayers before walking through the pilgrimage.
Shortly afterward, we’ll leave the village and ascend uphill that offers a lovely view of Ama Dablam and Kantega for a long time. The trail continuously rises upward, passing through several Chortens and villages, including Pangboche. While walking past the town, you can see stone-closed walls.
The journey from Tengboche to Dingboche requires 5-6 hours to finish, but it’s relatively challenging. Upon arrival at the village, you’ll get to relish the stunning sights of sweeping hills, glistening mountains, lofty hills, and beautiful valleys. We’ll spend the night in a tea house.
The hikes take around 3-4 hours and have us steering an off-the-beaten trail with rocks and boulders. After arriving at the hilltop, you’ll get to witness an incredible view of Chukhung Ri, Taboche Peak, Kangtega, and Thamserku. There are ample lodges and guest houses here to accommodate the trekkers climbing the hill. But, we won’t be dwelling here and instead get back to Dingboche. Overnight stay in a lodge.
Walking Hours: 5-6 hrs
Overnight at: a lodge
Out of Dingboche, the trail slopes downward to the village of Pheriche. After crossing the river, it starts ascending uphill along the river valley. The courses are rugged and filthy from here onwards, so not many locals and porters volunteer to travel ahead.
After almost 2 hours of trekking, we’ll arrive at Dugla and cross a small wooden bridge over the river fed by Khumbu Glacier. There’ll be a short mid-day break at Dugla before we continue the journey. From here, the trail rises upward for almost an hour, followed by a short walk to the village of Lobuche.
Throughout the entire way, we’ll get to enjoy the mesmerizing view of Mt. Everest along with Changtse, Makalu, Pumori, and Gyachung Kang. Even after arriving at Lobuche, we’ll get to view the rocky hills, sheer glaciers, and snowy ridge. Overnight stay in a lodge.
Everest Base Camp Altitude: 5,364 meters
Walking Hours: 6-7 hrs
Overnight at: a tea house
After breakfast, we’ll head towards the trail for a trek to Gorakshep, which is relatively more challenging than the others so far. They are jagged and filled with rocks and boulders, which makes it hard for trekkers to reach the remote settlement.
The path stretches 2.8 miles from the village and has us following the rocky moraine, which offers a captivating view of serene glacial lakes and icebergs underneath the Khumbu Glacier. The trails running to Gorakshep aren’t clear and filled with loose rocks, which are difficult and strenuous to ascend.
Since the altitude continuously rises from here, trekkers are more likely to suffer from altitude sickness. Therefore, we’ll climb the trail slowly, thus taking around 4-5 hours of walk. After reaching the small village, we’ll have our lunch and then walk the trail to Gorakshep shortly afterward.
The long March ahead of the trail might take 2-3 hours, depending on the effect of high altitude. After making our way over the base of the Khumbu Glacier, we’ll finally get to the Everest Base Camp. Standing at the foot of Khumbu Icefall, we can watch the magnificent view of Mt. Everest, Nuptse, Cho Oyu, and Pumori.
The topography and landscapes with shimmering glaciers above the base camp look stunning. During the exploration, you can see many tented camps set up by the climbers of Everest. After the sightseeing, we’ll return to the village of Gorakshep, following the same path as previous.
The trek gets a little easier this time, with most of the trails walking downhill. Within an hour or a few, we shall be back at the village that lies on the edge of the frozen lakebed, providing a fantastic view. Overnight stay is in a tea house.
Pheriche Altitude: 4,371 meters
Walking Hours: 6 hrs
Overnight at: a lodge
We’ll get up early today for the race to Kala Patthar at 18,513 ft. It’s one of the scenic spots in Khumbu and lies on the south ridge of Pumori. Although the trek from Gorakshep to Kala Patthar is just 1-2 hours, the hike still remains difficult with increasing altitude and unmarked trails.
They are steep with boulders and rocks with switchbacks before leveling off. After ending up at the windswept summit ridge, we’ll get stunning glimpses of Kantega, Chumbu, Taboche, and Ama Dablam. Its unique geographical features with towering hills, glacial lakes, and surrounding snow peaks makes the trek incredible.
After relishing the astonishing scenery, we will descend the trail to Gorakshep and have our breakfast. Shortly afterward, we’ll leave the village and head to Pheriche with a slow descent and cross Khumbu Khola. Following the rugged path beside lofty hills and valleys below Cholatse, we’ll end up at Pheriche.
The final push for Namche Bazaar will see us climbing the trail through coniferous and rhododendron forest. On the last few hours of the trek, we’ll cross the suspension bridge over Dudh Koshi River and the river valley above. Finally, after hiking for nearly 6-7 hours, we’ll reach Namche Bazaar. We’ll spend the night in a lodge.
After passing several villages and climbing down the river valley, we’ll make a final descent to the town. It comes with a dramatic view of snow-capped mountains along with Tibetan monasteries, Chortens, and prayer flags. Overnight stay in a guest house.

Everest Base Camp and Kala Patthar Trek are moderately challenging. They have mixed terrains with several ups and downs, which can be upsetting for some hikers. The paths are unpaved but marked in lower regions, but after going high, trekkers will have to pave their way through steep hills and ascend clifftops.
The paths from Lobuche to Gorakshep are filled with rocks and boulders, so trekkers must maintain their physical fitness. They’ll also have to travel glacial moraine and frozen lakebed before making it to the base of Khumbu Icefall.
Our 15 Days Everest Base Camp Trek costs USD $1500. But, there are other options available as well. The trek can be as low as $500 who trek solo without any porter and guide, avoid air travel and stay at some of the cheapest lodges. You usually walk about 5-6 hours in most of your trek days. The walks must be slow and steady.
If you are an experienced trekker, then you can trek on your own. But, having a guide helps you plan each day more efficiently. They know the place better. They explain the routes and culture of the locals. They are most useful in case of emergencies.
Whether hiring a porter is a good option or not depends on the trekker’s physical strength and stamina to carry the load. For beginners, we suggest hiring a porter as they’ll help you with your luggage. They’ll make it easy for you to walk the trail without getting tired and maintaining the pace by carrying the load.
It is an unwise decision to take children. But if they are old enough to trek for days at high altitudes in a cold climate, there shall be no huge problem. Make sure, they know the symptoms of altitude sickness and have prior experiences of a few days hike.
Unquestionably! Buy travel insurance that covers you even at high altitudes ie.upto 6000m. Insurances usually do not cover you over 3,000 meters altitude. So, make sure your insurance covers you for the Everest Base Camp Trek. Better be prepared than be sorry.

So, you have some matters to compromise during these off-seasons.
Everest Base Camp is just a moraine with some prayer flags during fall and dead season. Only in the spring, climbers come and make tented camps there. Sleeping in such a high altitude and cold place without a proper sleeping facility is risky. So, you come back to Gorak Shep for the overnight stay.

Tea houses offer standard services to their guests at the same or even lower price than that of hotels and lodges in the Khumbu region. From budget to double rooms with en suite, trekkers are free to choose any form of a room according to their convenience.
Since locals and families run the tea houses, the staff are amicable and caring. They provide great hospitality with good food and a warm welcome, making trekkers feel at home. A lot of the services offered to the guests in tea houses are covered, but some facilities like hot showers, internet, and electricity are not included in the package.
So, if you use the amenities, you’ll have to pay them separately. Apart from accommodation, tea houses also provide delicious food to the visitors. Things to be considered during Everest Base Camp and Kala Patthar Trek
1. Altitude Sickness
Altitude sickness is indeed the most common challenge faced by trekkers of Everest Base Camp and Kala Patthar. While going to higher altitudes, they experience a gradual decline in air pressure which causes shortness of breath and dizziness.
While many of them only witness minor symptoms like dizziness, headache, lack of appetite, and nausea, some have insomnia. Therefore, to prevent the sickness as much as possible, trekkers are required to acclimatize.
Namche and Dingboche are some of the most famous villages where trekkers stop to adapt to the weather and temperature. Acclimatization at these places helps trekkers to survive the low atmospheric pressure at base camp. Climbing the trails at a slower speed, staying hydrated, and taking proper rest also help to prevent altitude sickness.
2. Long and Steep Trails
No doubt, trekking is fun, but it surely is troublesome when the trails are as long and inclined as Everest Base Camp. The stress and exhaustion of continuously walking the paths with rocks and boulders dishearten any visitor but primarily beginners who have no previous trekking experience.
Stretching 38.5 miles one-way with two hours extra walk up to Kala Patthar is strenuous for any hiker unless they are physically fit and strong. Trekkers with low stamina and mental balance won’t be able to put up with the main course of EBC.
Therefore, visitors will have to spend enough time on their physical fitness and stability to avoid fatigue and distress. They’ll also have to measure their current fitness level and plan the workout accordingly. For beginners, aerobic and cardio exercises like cycling, brisk walking, or jogging seem to provide more benefits.
Walking the course of EBC doesn’t get easier with a continuous steep hill and no level ground up to miles. Therefore, to beat the mountainous terrains, trekkers will have to take both short and long-distance hikes. In that way, they’ll be able to cope with the trails and the severe weather of the mountains.
3. Weather and Climate
The climate and temperature of the Himalayas are unpredictable and harsh. It changes pretty quickly without any indications or even a single hint. Therefore trekkers will have to be extremely careful while planning the trip.
Since it’s a multi-day trek, chances for trekkers to face adverse weather at base camp are always high. But, hiking the landmark in winter and monsoon has extreme difficulties, especially cold weather.
Temperatures are generally below 0 Degree Celsius around this time, so trekkers will have to defy several odds to reach the camp. With the snowfall lasting several hours, trekkers will have difficulty hiking the paths unless they have crampons. Windstorms and blizzards impair the visibility, making it hard to find the way.
Spring and Autumn are ideally the best time for Everest Base Camp as they have pleasant weather. Visitors will quickly climb the trails with the sunny days followed by a clear blue sky and warm weather.
4. Accommodations
Accommodations available at Everest Base Camp and Kala Patthar Trek are basic. Although there are plenty of lodges and hotels to make reservations, trekkers usually prefer to dwell in tea houses. As compared to other forms of accommodation, they are less pricey, and the services are standard.
Most of these tea houses come with a double or sharing bedroom and an attached bathroom. But, a few of them do have a well-facilitated single room with an en-suite, except they are a little bit more expensive. Guests can expect no more than a comfortable bed with a pillow and a bedsheet.
Sleeping bags and down jackets are provided to fight the chilly wind and snowstorms in the mountain. Apart from that, trekkers will have to bear their private expenses including snacks, and trekking equipment.
5. Porters/Guide
Porters and guides are heaven-sent angels for trekkers as they help them carry the loads and navigate paths. They help Everest Base Camp and Kala Patthar hikers by transporting the luggage and making it relatively easy to walk the steep trails.
But, you’ll have to be very careful while hiring the guides as not everyone can speak fluent English. In such a situation, you might not be able to have proper communication. A licensed local guide can guide you better and even help you visit many unexplored places.
Also, don’t forget that the porter at Everest Base Camp can carry no more than 25kg weight. So, if there are any unwanted items in the backpack, then get rid of them immediately. These porters may charge you anywhere from US$16 to US$20 per day for helping with the loads.
