Overview
The Pikey Peak trek is an amazingly adventurous yet short trek in the Khumbu trails of Nepal. This trek is a relatively new adventure that takes you closer to the home of the world’s peak, Everest. You will get to see magical vistas of the mountains and landscapes of the Himalayan foothills. This trek will take you to several Sherpa hamlets. You then get to see mountains like Dhaulagiri, Everest, Makalu, and Kanchenjunga up close to the far west.
We will begin this trek from Kathmandu and end it by returning back to Kathmandu. The trek kicks off by driving from Kathmandu to Dhap Bazaar via a private vehicle. Then we will trek to Jhapre from Dhaap Bazaar, passing Sigane. From Jhapre, we head to the Pikey Base Camp. We will then cross the Pikey Peak and reach Junbesi.
This trek will be quite short. However, it will be an amazing option to explore the Khumbu region. Khumbu houses many remote trails that are popular for trekking. However, they require a lot of days to complete. Plus, you need to have great physical fitness in Nepal to comfortably finish the trek. The Pikey Peak trek is an alternative that allows you to explore Khumbu in a shorter time with less effort.

The Pikey Peak trek begins with a drive that kicks off from Kathmandu. We will get in a private jeep and head to Dhap Bazaar. The road passes alongside the beautiful Sunkoshi River. You will observe the immensely beautiful landscapes of Nepal’s countryside. Pass through various hills, rivers, terrace farms, villages, etc, during this drive. As you enjoy these vistas, you will also pass the village called Ghurmi. Most part of today’s trip shows you the beautiful countryside with not much sophisticated places.
After around 7 hours of driving, we will reach a place with rather hectic markets. This will mark the entry to our day’s destination, Dhap Bazaar.

The Pikey Peak trek officially kicks off from Dhap Bazaar. From here, we will start walking, and our first destination will be Jhapre. There are several routes for the Pikey Peak trek. However, our limited 7-day trek means we will choose a suitable route. So we will head to Jhapre via Sigane so we can reach the base camp on day 3. Most part of the walk today will be over roads that are under construction.
After around 4 hours of walking, we will arrive at Jhapre. The region lies in a deep valley that has mountains surrounding it. You will find immensely beautiful views of mountains of Numbur Himal and Everest from here. The place houses a monastery which is often a chosen place by trekkers to stay overnight.
Accommodation: Tea house/Lodge
Altitude: 3640 Meters
Distance: 15 km
Time taken - 5 hours trek
We will continue with our trek as we head to Pikey Base Camp today. The early morning vistas of mountains in the sunrise will be mesmerizing as we leave Jhapre. The trek begins as we ascend towards the grassy ridge at Bhulbule. Bhulbhule houses just one lodge, yet the place gives immaculate vistas of Everest. From Bhulbhule, the road diverges into two, and one leads us right towards the Pikey Peak. You will notice the trek will become uphill from here.
We will walk through the rhododendron forest of Lhamuje and pass through some villages. Then, the trail takes you to an open grassland with Yaks grazing around. Nearby, you will find a lengthy Mani wall and some cottages of yak herders that are abandoned. Then, you will pass a road curved toward a hillside beneath the Taklung Danda. The trail again merges towards a forest covered with rhododendron trees. After 2 hours of trekking from here, we will reach the Pikey Peak Base Camp. The place houses a cheese factory and welcomes you with breathtaking mountain vistas.

We will summit the Pikey Peak today. The journey will kick off early as it allows us to catch beautiful sunrise vistas. We will head out before dawn and walk along a very steep and rocky ridgeline. Then, a short hike from the base camp will lead us to the summit. At the very peak of the summit, you will be mesmerized by the beautiful mountain views. You will be at a height of 4065 meters, and the taller peaks of Nepal will get closer to you.
Mountains like Numbur Chuli (6959m), Thamserku (6608m), Kangtega (6685m), Khatang (6853m), Kanchenjunga (8586m), Manaslu (8163m), Dhaulagiri (8167m), Dorje Lakpa (6966m), Gaurishankar (7134m), Langtang (7246m), and Mt. Everest (8848.86m) etc. will be visible.
Since we will be there at the time of sunrise, the peaks absorbing the rays will seem magical. After our summit at the peak, we will head to the place of our overnight stay at Junbesi, passing through Lamjura La.

Today will be an exploration day in the area of our stay. We will go to visit the ancient monastery of Thuptenchholing Gompa, which lies at a height of 2920 meters. The Gompa lies a little higher than the Junbesi. We will follow a trail that goes uphill alongside the Junbesi Khola.
A delightful stroll leads through aromatic, coniferous forests, streams, and tiny waterfalls. You will pass through suspension bridges en route. The verdant mountains seem to dangle from every corner, and clouds are visible from above. Pass an odd stone that looks like a tomb, covered in broken, old engravings and moss. We'll traverse a stream on a suspension bridge and stroll past a sizable chorten (stupa) surrounded by exquisite statuettes at the summit.
We then climb to an elevation of 3000 meters, at which point we approach the grounds. This leads us to the Gompa, which is quite significant for its history, culture, and religious values. After we explore this ancient Gompa, we will return back to Junbesi.

We will resume our journey—which is also the final part of the Pikey Peak trek after breakfast. Our destiny today is Phalpu. We will come upon a steel suspension bridge. We then continue the dusty track that descends alongside the Junbesi Khola. We will go along the scenic trail before arriving in Phaplu for the night. Then, pass by the lovely location known as Beni Ghat.
After around 4 hours of trekking, we will finally reach the place of our overnight stay.

The Pikey Peak trek is a unique, newly discovered trekking trail. Although it takes you to places around the Khumbu region, it isn’t exactly the same. They will appear similar due to the alpine forests and rhododendron shrubs. You will also walk alongside the Sunkoshi riverside which might appear similar to the EBC trek’s Dudhkoshi river. However, they follow very different routes.

Best Time for Pikey Peak Trek
Autumn and spring are the ideal seasons in Nepal for hiking and mountain climbing. With the exception of the monsoon, we advise traveling at any time of year. Mountain climbing and long-distance travel are extremely challenging during the monsoon. The trails become slick, muddy, and untidy. Also, it is difficult for the isolated hamlets to get the resources they need to operate their lodging and fooding business. Thus, doing the trek during the rain will be uncomfortable altogether.
Nepal experiences the monsoon season from June to September. In recent years, the monsoon withdraws a little later than usual. Thus, when you schedule your climb, check the weather reports.
Trek during autumn or spring if you want to go on the Pikey Peak trek at its optimum season. The weather is wonderful during these months, with beautiful blue skies. Additionally, the temperature is rather moderate, so you don't have to work too hard to heat or cool your body. Similarly, Nepal is quite a fun place to be during the spring, when the Nepali New Year comes. In Nepal, the autumn months also herald in the festival seasons. It would compensate for a fantastic trip and adventure in Nepal.
Difficulty Level of Pikey Peak Trek
The Pikey Peak trek is of a moderate level of difficulty. We would consider this trek a lot easier than many variations of trek in the Khumbu region. Khumbu offers treks like the Everest Base Camp trek, Three-pass trek, and trekking peak climbs. Compared to those, this trek is comparatively easier. We will take just a week to complete it and only aim for 4065 meters at the peak.
People of any age can embark on this trek. However, ensure you do not bring toddlers that might need to be carried during the trek. Also, make sure you get fit before the trip. It ensures the best experience and comfort.
Preparation for the Pikey Peak Trek.
Most of your amenities for the Pikey Peak trek will be covered in our package. To those who are willing to take on Pikey Peak Trekking, simply showing up with your gear is insufficient. There are no easy ways out of the mountainside. So, our suggestion is to be psychologically and physically fit to make the ascent and descent.
So, if you intend to climb a peak, we advise you to invest the necessary time and effort. Make sure you are getting yourself ready for the challenge that the remote trails bring. A few weeks prior to the trek, start getting physically active. Getting in some leg exercises, running, swimming, and jogging would be a suitable physical preparation. You also need to make sure you look into your health condition. Take cautionary actions to minimize altitude sicknesses and other ailments.
Permits Needed for the Pikey Peak Trek
The Pikey Peak permit depends upon the route and itinerary you choose. Some treks would require you to pass through regions of Sagarmatha National Park or the Gaurishankar Conservation area. You would need entrance permits for those places, too.
However, for our seven-day trip, we will be entering the Solukhumbu region. This region imposes a Local Area permit, which foreign travelers need to obtain. There won’t be much traversing in other protected or permit-imposed regions. So you will need this Local Area Permit.
Other than the Local Area Permit, you will also need the TIMS permit. TIMS stands for Trekker’s Information Management System. It is a front that ensures safety for trekkers all around Nepal. This is a general permit that all foreign trekkers need to obtain in order to trek remote Nepali trails.
Included in the Pikey Peak Trek package
Accommodations and food
The food and lodging required for the full seven days will be included in our package. Depending on the location and day, these services might change for you. More food alternatives and well-equipped hotels will be in the city. Nonetheless, good dining options or local tea houses are available for overnight stays in isolated high-altitude locations as well.
The majority of the food options for the trek will be Nepali staples. Meals including rice, momo, thukpa noodles, chowmein noodles, lentils, vegetable curry, and so on will be served to you.
Transportation
We will be traveling by road at the beginning and end of our trip. First, we will drive from Kathmandu to Dhaap Bazaar to begin our trek. Similarly, we will travel back to Kathmandu from Phaplu to end our trek. Both trips will occur in our private vehicle. The cost of transportation is included in this package. Similarly, pick up and drop offs at the airport are also available within this transportation cost.
Permits
You will need two major permits for the trek. They are the TIMS permit and the Local Area permit. We will cover the cost of both these permits in the package. However, you need to provide us with a passport-sized photograph and the necessary documents to obtain the permit.
Guides and porters
You will need to hire guides while trekking remote trails in Nepal. The government of Nepal has imposed a compulsion on hiring licensed guides when foreigners travel remote trekking trails. We will ensure you get such a guide for your Pikey Peak trek. These guides will be the ones to lend you a hand on the trek. They handle all of the emergency decision-making, scheduling modifications when necessary, nursing responsibilities, route planning, etc., on your behalf. Guides are also necessary for overcoming language obstacles and interacting with locals.
Porters are another important factor needed for an easier trek. Hiring a porter during remote trail trekking in Nepal is not a rule. However, they do make your trek a lot more comfortable. Walking nonstop for seven days can be rather exhausting. Carrying heavy items makes the walk more strenuous. Therefore, to lessen the strain of the trek, you can hire porters. Locals with much experience hiking the treks are usually employed as porters. A porter can help you carry a load of up to 25 kg for the day.
Preparation of travel routes and itineraries
Navigating trekking trails of a foreign country is a very daunting task. You are quite unfamiliar with the place and might mess things up. So we will curate a suitable route based on your choice of the trek. This package covers places in the Khumbu region that take around 7 days to trek. We ensure you make overnight stops at places with amenities like lodges and food. If sudden changes need to be made because of unforeseen circumstances, we will do it too. You can just sit back and not worry about all these logistics.
